Description
Dire is a minor but memorable ally from the first story arc of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. He is a practitioner of the Ripple, also known as Hamon, a martial arts technique that uses controlled breathing to channel the energy of life through the body. Dire is a student of the master Tonpetty, making him a fellow disciple alongside Straizo and a very close friend of Will Anthonio Zeppeli.

In terms of background, Dire hails from an unspecified location and travels with his master and Straizo to Windknight's Lot after Tonpetty receives a letter from Zeppeli. This letter reveals the location of the Stone Mask, a dangerous artifact responsible for creating vampires. Dire's role in the story is to assist Jonathan Joestar, the protagonist of this first part, in his final confrontation against the villainous vampire Dio Brando. He proves his allegiance to Jonathan by immediately testing the young Joestar's abilities upon their first meeting. Dire attacks Jonathan with a Ripple technique to see if he is truly strong enough to be Zeppeli's friend and then provides Jonathan with the letter from Zeppeli as proof of his good intentions.

Personality-wise, Dire is portrayed as fierce and honorable. He is a determined fighter who seeks to avenge the death of his friend Zeppeli, requesting that Jonathan allow him to battle Dio one-on-one. This sense of honor and loyalty defines his actions and his ultimate sacrifice. Even in the face of certain death, Dire shows incredible resolve and a defiant spirit, refusing to go quietly and instead using his last moments to strike back at his foe.

Dire's role in the story is brief but significant. He confronts Dio directly while Jonathan and his allies are preparing for their final assault. In this battle, Dire unleashes his most powerful and famous technique, the Thunder Cross Split Attack. However, even this perfect technique, which is said to be unbreakable in both attack and defense by anyone other than Dio, is no match for the vampire's overwhelming power. Dio counters with his freezing ability, shattering Dire's body and leaving him as only a decapitated head. In his final act of defiance and as his character development peaks, Dire uses the last of his Ripple energy, fueled by the remaining oxygen in his brain, to spit a Ripple-infused rose from his mouth. The thorn of the rose flies into Dio's eye, injuring the vampire and proving that even in defeat, Dire was a determined and honorable warrior until the very end.

Dire is most notable for his abilities as a Ripple master. He possesses incredible control over his own body, to the point where he can create afterimages when moving or deliberately manipulate his speed to appear slower, tricking his opponents into lowering their guard. He can also infuse objects with the Ripple, such as the rose he uses in his final attack. His signature techniques include the Thunder Split Attack, a jump and split that allows him to strike the opponent's neck with a rapid chop, and its perfected form, the Thunder Cross Split Attack. By crossing his arms into an "X" formation, this advanced technique eliminates the defensive weakness of the standard split attack, creating what is described as a perfect strategy where one can attack while keeping the guard up.
