Description
In the world of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, specifically within the Phantom Blood storyline, the character known as Blueford is more accurately referred to as Bruford. He is a significant secondary antagonist who initially serves as a powerful minion of the main villain, Dio Brando. Bruford is an undead zombie, a centuries-old corpse revived by Dio's vampiric powers, and he is one half of the legendary duo known as the Dark Knights, the other being his lifelong companion, Tarkus.

Bruford's origins lie in 16th century England, where he was a noble and incredibly skilled knight who served Mary Stuart. His loyalty to his queen was absolute, surpassing even romantic love, and he was one of only five individuals in history to successfully complete the grueling Challenge of the 77 Rings. Alongside Tarkus, he was a formidable warrior, able to single-handedly defeat entire armies. However, their story ended in tragedy due to the political machinations of Queen Elizabeth I. After being tricked into surrendering to save Mary, they were led to their execution, only to be shown Mary's severed head, revealing she had already been killed. This act of ultimate betrayal filled Bruford with an immense, undying hatred for all humanity.

Centuries later, the vampire Dio Brando resurrects Bruford and Tarkus in Windknight's Lot. As a zombie, Bruford is initially defined by this deep-seated rage and a desire for destruction, willingly serving Dio's goal of conquering the world. He is a cold and merciless fighter, using his reanimated state to kill and devour villagers without remorse. Despite his corrupted state, a core part of his original personality endures: his pride as a knight. This sense of honor dictates that he faces worthy opponents in single combat, and he refuses to allow his partner Tarkus to interfere in his personal duels.

His primary role in the story is to act as a major obstacle for the protagonist, Jonathan Joestar, testing his strength and resolve. Their battle begins with Bruford using his unique and deadly technique, the Dance Macabre Hair. This ability allows him to manipulate his long, dark hair as a powerful third arm, using it to entangle opponents, wield his sword from unpredictable angles, and even drain blood from his victims. The fight is intense, forcing Jonathan underwater where he must use his Hamon breathing technique to survive. It is during this final clash that Bruford's character arc reaches its climax.

Jonathan's Hamon, a ripple-based energy that is fatal to the undead, does not just physically harm Bruford. It also restores his ability to feel pain, which he recognizes as proof of life and a prerequisite for feeling joy. This act of purification reawakens his long-dormant humanity, erasing the centuries of hatred that had consumed him. Moved by Jonathan's courage and noble spirit, the knight stops his final attack. In a moment of profound redemption, Bruford offers Jonathan his most prized possession, his sword. On the blade, he adds a "P" in his own blood to the word "LUCK," creating "PLUCK" (courage). He gifts this weapon to Jonathan, bestowing upon him the very quality that defined his life as a knight. Having made peace with the world and himself, Bruford dies a true death, smiling as he expresses his intention to rejoin his beloved queen in the afterlife. His legacy lives on through Jonathan, who uses the sword, renamed Luck and Pluck, for the rest of his journey.
