Description
Kars is the leader of the Pillar Men, an ancient and powerful race of humanoid beings who lived underground to escape the sun. As a genius among his people, he is the original creator of the Stone Mask, an artifact that unlocks hidden potential in living beings. While the mask successfully transforms humans into vampires, it was unable to fully unlock the abilities of the Pillar Men, only increasing their hunger. This drove Kars to begin indiscriminately feeding on organisms, devastating entire ecosystems and causing his own people to deem him a threat. In the resulting conflict, Kars slaughtered almost all of his race, saving only his comrade Esidisi and two infants, who would grow to become Wamuu and Santana.

Kars is defined by an cold, ruthless, and relentless personality, driven by an obsessive ambition to conquer the Pillar Men's only weakness, sunlight. He operates on a pragmatic philosophy where the method of achieving victory is irrelevant; only the final result matters. Despite his disdain for humans, whom he readily kills, Kars exhibits a strange and often-noted compassion for other forms of life, such as plants and animals. He once sliced a car in half to save a puppy and carefully maneuvered his body while falling to avoid crushing a patch of flowers. He is also capable of forming genuine bonds, as seen in his deep respect and grief for his long-time comrades, Esidisi and Wamuu, vowing to avenge their deaths after achieving his ultimate form.

Kars serves as the main antagonist of the second part of the story, where he awakens from a millennia-long hibernation to continue his quest for the Red Stone of Aja. This perfect gem is the final component needed to empower his Stone Mask and complete his evolution. His most significant relationship is with his nemesis, Joseph Joestar, whose cunning and resourcefulness repeatedly thwart his plans. Kars also holds a complex dynamic with his fellow Pillar Men: he values Wamuu and Esidisi as allies but dismisses Santana as a mere guard dog. To achieve his goal, Kars is unafraid to abandon any pretense of honor. He cheats in a formal duel by using a decoy to mortally wound his opponent, Lisa Lisa, demonstrating his belief that the end always justifies the means.

Kars undergoes a significant transformation, achieving his goal of becoming the Ultimate Lifeform. In this state, he is no longer weak to sunlight and gains the ability to manipulate his body on a cellular level, accessing the DNA of every creature on Earth. He can manifest wings for flight, turn his hand into a carnivorous squirrel, and produce a shell of bubbles to survive magma. He also masters the Ripple, a form of energy attuned to sunlight, at a level hundreds of times more powerful than a human master. His notable abilities in his base form include Light Mode, where he produces razor-sharp, chainsaw-like blades from his limbs that also reflect blinding light..

Despite obtaining god-like power, Kars is ultimately defeated by Joseph Joestar through a combination of trickery and geological happenstance. He is knocked by a volcanic eruption into the cold void of outer space. His immortal and invulnerable body, unable to die or return to Earth, freezes solid. He drifts through the cosmos forever, a fate that leads him to eventually stop thinking altogether.
