Description
Archduke Verance, also known by his full name Augusta Henry Highland, is a supporting character in the narrative who holds the prestigious title of Archduke of Verance. As a proud Britannian noble, he serves as the suzerain with the significant responsibility of overseeing the European territories under the control of the Holy Britannian Empire. Physically, he is depicted as a mature adult male with blue eyes and long gray hair, which he wears tied back, and his appearance is marked by a mustache and goatee.
In terms of personality, Verance is characterized by a strong sense of chivalry and honor, which sets him apart from some of the more ruthless military leaders within the imperial hierarchy. His commitment to these principles is most clearly demonstrated when he directly disobeys a direct order from Julius Kingsley, the imperial advisor sent to oversee the European campaign. He refuses to sanction an attack on the Europia United because he believes the resulting collateral damage would harm innocent civilians, a course of action his sense of duty will not allow.
This act of defiance forms the core of his role in the story. When Verance objects to Julius Kingsley’s plan on ethical grounds, he is immediately accused of treason. His authority is overridden, and he is subsequently arrested and temporarily incapacitated on the orders of Julius Kingsley, who asserts that the Emperor desires victory at any cost. Following his removal, the governance of Euro-Britannia is transferred to the House of Lords and the Knight Orders, a change that ultimately leads to the region being overthrown by the ambitious Shin Hyuga Shaing.
His key relationships are primarily defined by his opposition to Julius Kingsley, whose brutal and pragmatic strategies he finds reprehensible. After the defeat and death of Shin Hyuga Shaing at the hands of the W-0 unit, Archduke Verance is restored to his former position of power. However, his return to authority comes with a notable change, as he is now placed under greater control and oversight from the Britannian homeland, reflecting the empire's ongoing consolidation of its conquests in Europe. While his primary abilities are not combative, his authority as the highest-ranking imperial representative in the region grants him significant political and strategic influence, a power he is willing to risk in order to uphold his own moral code.
