Description
Peke is a small talking robot created by Lala Satalin Deviluke to serve as her all-purpose costume module. In its usual resting state, Peke looks like a compact creature with spiral-shaped eyes and small wings on its back, and it is almost always seen perched on Lala's head like a hair accessory. Although Peke is a machine, it is clearly sentient and capable of expressing a range of human-like emotions, which makes it function more like a living companion than a simple tool.
As a costume robot, Peke's main purpose is to form Lala's clothing. It can instantly transform into any outfit that Lala has programmed into it, and it can also copy the appearance of any kind of clothing simply by seeing it. Because of this, Peke acts as Lala's portable wardrobe, allowing her to change outfits at a moment's notice. This ability has a practical limitation, however, because producing and maintaining clothing drains Peke's power supply. If Peke goes too long without recharging, the clothing it generates gradually dissolves until it disappears entirely, usually leaving Lala without clothes at an inconvenient moment. Peke recovers its energy by sleeping, and this nightly recharge requirement is a recurring detail of its behavior.
Peke was created by Lala and is exceptionally devoted to her, serving as her most constant companion. This devotion defines Peke's motivation, as its actions consistently revolve around staying close to Lala, looking after her needs, and supplying her wardrobe. In the original series, Peke is a frequent presence in everyday scenes, often offering commentary on the events unfolding around Lala and providing comic relief, particularly when its battery runs low or when its transformations cause unexpected problems.
Despite being artificial, Peke relates closely to the people around Lala. It accompanies Lala through daily life in the Yuuki household and is present for many of the interactions between Lala, Rito Yuuki, and the other residents. Peke's most significant relationship is with Lala, its creator and primary companion, but it also becomes a familiar fixture for the wider circle of characters. One notable incident involving Peke occurs when a malfunctioning invention temporarily merges Rito's body with Peke's, an event that Rito later keeps quiet about, which becomes a meaningful moment within the larger story.
Peke's role continues into To Love-Ru -Trouble- Darkness, although its presence diminishes noticeably. As the story shifts its focus toward other characters, Lala appears less frequently, and Peke's appearances decline along with hers. Even in scenes where Lala is present, Peke rarely speaks, to the point where it is easy to overlook. Nevertheless, Peke retains its defining characteristics throughout the series: a loyal, talkative costume robot with the ability to reshape itself into any kind of clothing, standing as a lasting reflection of Lala's inventiveness and of the close bond between creator and creation.
