Description
Nobuyuki Sugou is the real-world identity of the Fairy King Oberon, the primary antagonist of the Alfheim Online arc in Sword Art Online. In reality, he serves as the chief of the research institute RECT Progress, a subsidiary of the electronics manufacturer RECT Inc., and is deeply trusted by Asuna's father. He was originally selected to marry Asuna and was effectively adopted into the family on her father's wishes. Sugou attended the same university as Kayaba Akihiko, where he was Kayaba's junior and developed an intense inferiority complex toward the genius game designer, viewing him as a rival he could never surpass.

Sugou's outward appearance is that of a capable, polite, and amiable young professional, but this masks a deeply narcissistic, greedy, and amoral nature. He is an ambitious and ruthless entrepreneur who exploits the chaos of the Sword Art Online incident to secretly transfer the minds of three hundred SAO players, including Asuna, into his own virtual world, ALfheim Online. His true goal is to research and perfect mind-control and memory manipulation technology by performing illegal and unethical experiments on these trapped victims, intending to sell the technology to corporations and governments, ultimately aspiring to become a god-like figure who can control reality itself.

In the virtual world, Sugou adopts the avatar Oberon, the Fairy King, and wields full system administrator privileges that grant him near-absolute power over the game's rules. As Oberon, he has green eyes and wings, shoulder-length blond hair, wears a crown, a long dark green mantle, and a green robe adorned with an emerald-like jewel. He uses his authority to imprison Asuna in a birdcage at the top of the World Tree, subjecting her to psychological torment, harassment, and attempted assault. His treatment of Asuna is driven by a possessive and perverse obsession, viewing her as a prize and a tool for his gratification rather than as a person.

Sugou's relationship with Kirito is one of contemptuous rivalry. He initially dismisses Kirito as a powerless teenager, but their conflict escalates when Kirito storms the World Tree to rescue Asuna. During their confrontation, Oberon's system commands allow him to effortlessly dominate Kirito, but he is ultimately undone when the digital ghost of Kayaba Akihiko intervenes, overriding Oberon's privileges and allowing Kirito to defeat him. In the real world, after being exposed and stripped of his position, Sugou attempts to murder Kirito with a knife outside Asuna's hospital, only to be easily overpowered and arrested, leading to his imprisonment. He reappears in the Alicization arc as an overarching off-screen antagonist, having been involved in the wider conspiracy surrounding the Rath project.

Sugou's personality is characterized by a combination of grandiosity and cowardice. He craves power and recognition, particularly to surpass Kayaba, yet possesses no original creativity or moral restraint, relying instead on theft, deception, and exploitation. His abilities as a researcher are real, but his lack of ethical boundaries and his petty, sadistic nature make him a figure of pure self-interest. He has no positive relationships; his connection to Asuna is one of predatory control, his bond with Kayaba is one of jealous resentment, and his professional trust from Asuna's father is a facade he exploits. His defining traits are greed, a deep-seated inferiority complex, and a complete absence of empathy, driving his every action in both the real and virtual worlds.
