Description
Atsushi Shimao is a central character in the story, introduced as the deceased husband of the flower shop owner Rokka Shimao. He exists as a ghost, having remained in the earthly realm for three years after his death, unable to move on to the afterlife. Before his passing, Atsushi was a successful architect by profession, a detail that speaks to a meticulous and perhaps creative mind.

In terms of personality, Atsushi is a profoundly complex and contradictory figure. He is portrayed as a jealous and possessive spirit, actively seeking to disrupt any potential romantic relationship his widow might form, particularly with the young man Ryosuke Hazuki. His actions can be selfish, petty, and at times, outright manipulative and cruel, such as when he uses his ghostly powers to sabotage a tender moment between Hazuki and Rokka. Despite these flaws, the narrative also grants him deep sympathy. He is driven by a powerful, enduring love for Rokka and an agonizing sense of regret at having left her behind. This internal conflict makes him a tragic figure; he is a man who, on some level, knows his wife should move on and find happiness, even having attempted to give her divorce papers before his death, yet he cannot bear the reality of her doing so.

Atsushi's primary motivation is his love for Rokka, but this love manifests as a desire to possess her and keep her trapped in her grief. He is a prisoner of his own unresolved feelings, and his core struggle is learning to let go. He wants Rokka to be happy, but he also wants to be the only one who makes her happy, a wish that is impossible for a ghost to fulfill. This paradox is the source of most of the story's central conflict.

His role in the story is that of the supernatural obstacle, forming one corner of an unusual love triangle. Unlike a typical romantic rival, Atsushi is invisible to everyone except Hazuki, making him a tormentor that only his competitor can perceive. He serves as a living (or rather, unliving) embodiment of the past, forcing both Rokka and Hazuki to confront grief, loss, and the difficulty of moving forward. For a significant portion of the narrative, Atsushi's actions drive the plot, as he engineers a way to possess Hazuki's body to be close to Rokka again, effectively hijacking his rival's life and physical form.

His key relationships are naturally with the two other main characters. His relationship with Rokka is the heart of the story; it is a bond of deep love now twisted into a haunting. She is unaware of his spectral presence for much of the series, so her relationship is with his memory, while his is an active, agonizing watch over her every move. His relationship with Hazuki is one of intense rivalry and forced co-dependence. They are eternal adversaries, but Hazuki is the only person who can see and interact with Atsushi, making them unwilling partners in a bizarre conflict. This rivalry culminates in Atsushi possessing Hazuki's body, a violation that creates a deeply unsettling dynamic where the ghost must live through the very man he despises.

Throughout the narrative, Atsushi undergoes significant development. He begins as a purely antagonistic spirit, but his suffering and regret are gradually revealed. The act of possessing Hazuki's body and living a semblance of a life with Rokka again forces him to confront the futility of his situation. He realizes that any affection Rokka shows him while he is in Hazuki's body is actually meant for Hazuki, deepening his despair. Ultimately, his development is about reaching an acceptance of his own death and making the heartbreaking choice to release Rokka from her emotional bondage to him, allowing her to live fully in the present.

Notable abilities are tied to his ghostly nature. As a spirit, he is invisible and intangible to almost everyone except Hazuki, allowing him to observe and move through the world unnoticed. He can also demonstrate a degree of poltergeist-like power, capable of manipulating physical objects, shaking rooms, or using his energy to create tremors to interfere with Hazuki and Rokka's interactions. His most significant ability is the power to possess Hazuki's body, which occurs when Hazuki is in a vulnerable state, allowing Atsushi to temporarily inhabit the living world and interact with Rokka directly.
