Description
Hōtarō Oreki is the main protagonist of the story, a sixteen to seventeen-year-old male student attending Kamiyama High School. He stands at 172 centimeters in height and has a birthday on April 28th. His physical appearance is characterized by dark brown, curly hair that can sometimes take on a subtle greenish tint depending on the light, paired with distinctive emerald green eyes. He is typically seen in his school’s dark, long-cut uniform, and his casual wardrobe is noted for being simple and minimalist, favouring items like large white coats and thick yellow scarves in colder weather.

His life is governed by a personal motto that defines his every action: "If I don't have to do something, I won't. If I have to do something, I'll make it quick". He proudly labels himself an "energy conservationist," subscribing to a philosophy that prioritizes efficiency and the avoidance of any unnecessary expenditure of energy. He prefers what he calls a "gray life," seeking a dull, uneventful existence and considering himself to be utterly average in every way, with no interest in sports, arts, or clubs, which he views as inefficient and wasteful.

Despite this self-image of ordinariness, Oreki possesses a hidden but formidable talent for keen insight and deductive reasoning. He has a habit of pinching the hair on his forehead when deep in thought. However, he dismisses his abilities, often attributing his correct conclusions to simple luck or a random flash of inspiration rather than any real skill.

The primary catalyst for his character is Eru Chitanda, a fellow member of the Classics Club whose overwhelming and infectious curiosity he finds impossible to resist. When Chitanda locks eyes with him and declares, "I'm curious," Oreki finds his energy-saving lifestyle put on hold as he feels compelled to find an answer for her, believing that fighting her curiosity would ultimately consume more energy than simply solving the puzzle. Within the group, he functions as the deductive reasoning component, the one who pieces together disparate facts to arrive at the truth. His role in the story is to reluctantly apply his intelligence to solve a variety of everyday mysteries that the club encounters, ranging from the origins of a decades-old school festival incident to the hidden intentions behind an unfinished student film.

His key relationships define his growth. He is coerced into joining the nearly-defunct Classics Club by his older sister, Tomoe Oreki, who is aware of his talents and nudges him into situations where he must use them. His friendship with Satoshi Fukube, a cheerful and encyclopedic "database" of information, provides Oreki with facts and context, though their dynamic is sometimes tinged with Satoshi's envy of Oreki's natural deductive gifts. His relationship with Mayaka Ibara, another club member, starts from a place of mutual distrust but grows into a respectful friendship, with Mayaka often serving as a grounded, audience-surrogate viewpoint.

Oreki's character development is a central theme of the narrative. Over time, the influence of Chitanda and his friends slowly begins to add colour to his previously grey world. A pivotal moment occurs when he is manipulated by a senior, Fuyumi Irisu, who strokes his ego by telling him he is "special" in order to solve a mystery for her. This leads to a crisis of self-image when his conclusion is wrong, forcing him to question his own identity and the validity of his abilities. He emerges from this experience with a matured perspective, learning to use his talents not for the sake of a label like "detective," but to add value to the lives of his friends. He begins to take initiative, solving problems like the "Juumonji" case to help the club's goals, demonstrating a clear departure from his initial philosophy of absolute inaction.

His notable abilities extend beyond simple deduction. He possesses an extraordinarily sharp memory for details he deems relevant and has read a vast number of books, ranging from classic mysteries and speculative fiction to encyclopedias and philosophical texts, which provide him with a deep well of knowledge to draw upon. He is a pragmatic and analytical thinker who seeks the most efficient path to a solution, often approaching problems with a controlled, logical methodology and a preference for planning over spontaneity. While he avoids physical exertion, his true strength lies in his powerful, calculating mind, which he releases in short, decisive bursts of focused energy.
