Description
Kaho Jūmonji is a minor but memorable character in Hyouka. She has long, dark eggplant-colored hair that she typically wears in a braid, with bondi-blue eyes and a distinctive mole beneath the tip of her left eye. She is almost always seen wearing oval-shaped glasses. Kaho comes from a family with close ties to the Chitanda family; the Jūmonji family runs the Arekusu Shrine, where Kaho serves as a shrine maiden.
Her personality is characterized as friendly and gentle, and she speaks in a soft manner. Kaho is first encountered during the Kanya Festival, where she is the sole member of the Fortune-Telling Club and operates a small tent offering readings. Her role in the story is primarily as a catalyst for the Jumonji Incident, the festival's central mystery. When Eru Chitanda visits her tent for a free fortune, Kaho reveals that a specific tarot card, The Wheel of Fortune, has gone missing, alongside a strange note signed "Jumonji." The note, which threatens to steal or tamper with exhibits that violate a certain standard, sparks a school-wide search for the culprit. Kaho quickly denies any connection to the culprit using that name.
Kaho shares a key relationship with Eru Chitanda, rooted in their families' longstanding friendship. This is evident when Eru personally delivers a gift of sake from the Chitanda family to the Jūmonji family at the shrine during New Year's. Their personal connection is also shown by Kaho addressing Eru by her given name without formal honorifics, and Eru later mentioning a friend who joined the Fortune-Telling Club, who is presumably Kaho. She is also classmates with Satoshi Fukube, whom she refers to as "Fukube-kun".
Kaho does not undergo significant personal development, as her appearances are brief and serve to advance the mystery of the festival arc. Her notable abilities include fortune telling, specifically tarot card readings, though she is unable to perform a reading due to the missing card at the time of her introduction. In supplementary material, such as the Hyouka Drama CD, Kaho's character is explored in a different light, showing signs of having chuunibyou, a syndrome of delusional grandeur, during a mock battle with Eru Chitanda.
