Description
Do’on Furuya is the father of the protagonist Chihiro Furuya in Sankarea: Undying Love. His background is marked by tragedy and obsession; he is a reclusive otaku who became a hikikomori after the accidental death of his wife, which he indirectly caused. This event shattered his mental state, leading him to live in complete isolation within the Furuya family home, dedicating his life to a singular, morbid purpose.

Personality-wise, Do’on is eccentric, obsessive, and emotionally stunted. He presents a disheveled and unkempt appearance, rarely leaving his room, which is cluttered with anime merchandise and scientific equipment. Despite being a father, he is largely neglectful of Chihiro’s basic emotional needs, viewing his son more as an assistant or a nuisance than as family. His personality is driven by a deep-seated denial of death; he cannot accept the finality of his wife’s passing, and this manifests as a cold, single-minded focus on his experiments.

His primary motivation is to resurrect his deceased wife using a special revival serum he believes he can create. This goal is the sole driver of his actions throughout the story. His role in the narrative is that of a catalyst and a cautionary figure. He provides Chihiro with access to the zombie lore and the initial chemicals used to create the potion that eventually turns Rea Sanka into a zombie. He serves as a dark reflection of what Chihiro could become—a man so consumed by love and loss that he loses his humanity.

In terms of key relationships, Do’on’s most significant connection is with his son, Chihiro. Their dynamic is strained and utilitarian; Do’on uses Chihiro for errands and raw materials for his experiments. He also has a notable relationship with Rea Sanka, whom he views primarily as a successful test subject for his resurrection theory rather than as a person. His deceased wife is the phantom figure that haunts all his interactions, representing his ultimate unattainable goal.

Do’on undergoes a subtle but important development by the series’ end. Encountering Rea as a functioning zombie forces him to confront the reality of his quest. He realizes that even if his wife were to return, she would not be the person he remembered, akin to a reanimated corpse rather than a living woman. This revelation allows him a measure of closure, leading him to finally abandon his obsessive resurrection project and leave his self-imposed isolation.

His most notable ability is his extensive, albeit unorthodox, knowledge of pharmaceutical chemistry and zoology. He is skilled enough to synthesize a complex chemical compound that can preserve life functions in the deceased, effectively creating a controlled zombie state. He also has a surprising knowledge of obscure resurrection rituals due to his deep research into folklore. As a result, he is the indirect creator of the zombie condition in the story, possessing the theoretical and practical know-how to manipulate the boundary between life and death.
