Description
Dan'ichirō Sanka is the current head of the Sanka family and the father of Rea Sanka, the main heroine. At 48 years old, he comes from a wealthy and prestigious lineage, holding titles as a pianist, writer, calligrapher, and gourmet, though his most defining characteristic is his obsessive and pathological love for his only daughter. This fixation began after the premature death of Rea's mother, to whom Dan'ichirō had been devoted. He met his first wife during a fencing competition and married her impulsively following a deep, instant connection, unconcerned with his family's status. After she died giving birth to Rea, he began projecting his intense love for his lost wife onto their daughter, seeing her as the last remnant of his beloved.
Dan'ichirō's personality is rigid, perfectionist, and extremely controlling. He is a germaphobe with a marked aversion to dirt and animals, particularly cats, which he is allergic to. This manifests as a constant habit of wearing white or brown gloves, which he only removes when touching Rea. His love for Rea has become decidedly unhealthy, expressed through suffocating control rather than genuine paternal warmth. He systematically isolates his daughter, eliminating any friends or even animals that show interest in her, convinced that he is the only person she will ever need. His most infamous behavior is taking nude photographs of Rea on each of her birthdays, which he justifies as a father's right to document her growth. Convinced that his extreme actions are pure expressions of paternal love, his behavior causes Rea profound emotional suffering and is a primary catalyst for her desperate actions.
In the story, Dan'ichirō serves as the primary antagonist and the source of conflict that drives Rea to despair. His overprotection directly leads to Rea's attempt to escape her life, which ultimately results in her death and subsequent rebirth as a zombie. His key relationships are defined by his obsession. He maintains a distant and cold relationship with his second wife, Aria Sanka, as he never loved her and reportedly never slept with her, having married her out of a sense of panic after his first wife's death. His relationship with the protagonist, Chihiro Furuya, is overtly hostile. Viewing Chihiro as a threat to his control over Rea, Dan'ichirō challenges the boy to a fencing duel with the intention of killing him. Dan'ichirō is an accomplished fencer, a skill from his youth that he retains.
Despite being the story's villain, Dan'ichirō undergoes significant development. During the duel with Chihiro, he is stopped by Rea's direct intervention and words. This event causes a shift in his perspective, leading to a reconciliation of sorts where he accepts Chihiro as Rea's protector, albeit with stern warnings about premarital relations. Following this, Dan'ichirō's motivation transforms from control to a desperate search for redemption. He decides to travel overseas to various research institutions, specifically to the United States, in a quest to find a medical cure for Rea's undead condition. This action demonstrates a shift from possessive love to a more active, though still extreme, form of devotion aimed at saving her life. His later travels also put him in contact with Chihiro's grandfather, learning more about the nature of zombies and reinforcing his determination.
