Description
Izumi Akizawa is a student in the 1998 third-year class 3-3 at Yomiyama North Middle School, where she serves as the head of the Countermeasures Committee and later becomes the female class representative. She is a girl of average height with long, reddish-brown hair styled into two wavy pigtails often tied with ribbons, and her eyes share a similar color. Born on October 8, 1983, she is 14 or 15 years old during the events of the story.

Akizawa is known for her strong-willed, serious, and responsible personality. She is a natural leader who is straightforward and unabashed in her approach to problems. While she can come across as stern, strict, and sometimes impulsive, she is fundamentally dedicated to protecting her classmates from the mysterious calamity that plagues their class. Her outward toughness often masks a more vulnerable interior, and she has a complex, tsundere-like nature, showing a warmer side on rare occasions. She is also a member of the drama club.

Akizawa's primary motivation is to uphold the countermeasures designed to prevent the class's annual disaster. She is deeply resentful of Mei Misaki and Koichi Sakakibara, believing that their interaction undermines the crucial rule of treating a designated student as "nonexistent" and that their actions have directly led to the continuation of the curse and the deaths of their classmates. Her personal history includes a troubled home life; her older brother was a shut-in who eventually committed suicide, and her cousin, Kazuma Akazawa, also died. These losses contribute to her fragile emotional state and her desperate need for control. She mourns the death of her close friend, Yukari Sakuragi, whose fatal accident she blames on Koichi and Mei.

In the anime adaptation, Akizawa has a subtle romantic interest in Koichi, a feeling she herself does not fully understand due to the supernatural forces distorting memories related to the class's "dead person". Her relationship with the other students is one of authority and respect, though her best friend is fellow committee member Takako Sugiura in the anime or Yukari in the manga. She also clashes frequently with the outspoken Naoya Teshigawara.

Over the course of the story, Akizawa transitions from a composed and effective leader into a figure of increasing desperation and rage as the countermeasures fail and the death toll rises. Her psychological breaking point occurs during the class trip, where she openly accuses Koichi and Mei of being responsible for the calamity and argues for extreme measures.

Her fate differs significantly across versions of the story. In the anime, after being manipulated into believing Mei is the "dead one," she pursues her with violent intent. During a storm, she pushes Koichi out of the way of falling glass, resulting in fatal injuries that cause her to bleed to death. In the original novel, she is pursued by the caretaker's insane wife, Numata Mineko, and dies after falling from a balcony and breaking her neck. In the manga, however, she survives the calamity, cutting her hair short while recovering in the hospital. She possesses no supernatural abilities, but her competence lies in her organizational skills, strategic thinking, and physical assertiveness.
