Description
Fudo Zen is the enigmatic supreme commander of Neo Deava, the organization that pilots the Aquarion mecha to defend humanity. His background is the central mystery of his character, as he is revealed to be the very same person as Fudo Gen, the commander from the original series 12,000 years prior. In truth, his existence stretches back even further, over 24,000 years, to the age of Apollonius and the original war against the Fallen Angels. This makes him an immortal being who has dedicated his millennia-long life to studying the mysteries of the mythical mechanical being Aquarion. His return to the command of Neo Deava at the start of the series coincides with the awakening of a new generation of pilots, whom he immediately begins to guide.

Fudo Zen has a distinctive and highly unconventional personality. He speaks in riddles and metaphors, often using playing cards or a simple doughnut to illustrate complex strategic or emotional concepts during battle. His demeanor is a peculiar blend of the majestic and the absurd; while he possesses the commanding presence of an ancient warrior and speaks with profound authority, he can also exhibit sudden, almost manic bursts of energy and perform seemingly nonsensical actions that baffle his subordinates. He appears to see all and know all, often revealing that he is fully aware of a pilot's secret past or hidden potential long before anyone else. Despite his seemingly omnipotent perception, he is not without empathy, showing visible distress when a young pilot perishes in battle. This combination of traits makes him a deeply mysterious and sometimes intimidating figure, with some of the younger pilots, like Mikono, admitting to finding him unsettling.

Fudo Zen's primary motivation is not merely to win individual battles but to guide the new generation of Element pilots toward a greater destiny and to uncover the fundamental truth of the universe as it relates to Aquarion. He is obsessed with the power of love, which is both the greatest fuel for Aquarion and a dangerous, forbidden force. To this end, he enforces a strict rule that love between male and female pilots is prohibited, a decree he famously announces after punching a hole through a massive wall that previously separated the genders. His actions are always strategic, even when they appear chaotic. He orchestrates grueling training exercises and manipulates events from behind the scenes, including temporarily leaving the organization, to force his pilots to discover crucial truths for themselves, such as the secrets contained within the Genesis Book. He serves the role of a trickster mentor, forcing growth through paradox and challenge.

In the story, Fudo Zen acts as the supreme commander and primary strategist. He was absent for a period before the series begins but returns dramatically to take charge during a critical battle, immediately reorganizing the academy. Throughout the series, he issues baffling commands during combat, such as forcing a sudden change of pilots, which always ultimately lead to victory and a deeper understanding of Aquarion's power. He is the one who reveals the truth of the past lives of the main characters, Amata and Mikono, and his own true identity as the reincarnation of the legendary sun-winged angel, Apollonius. This revelation reframes his entire character; he is not just a commander but a principal player in a love story and a conflict spanning 24,000 years. His key relationships are with the main pilots, particularly Amata, whom he mentors similarly to how he mentored the hero of the previous era, and with the primary antagonist, Mikage, who is revealed to be the reincarnation of his former fiancé, Toma.

While Fudo Zen appears static in his wisdom, his role in the story involves a significant personal resolution. After spending millennia rejecting the love of Toma's reincarnation, Mikage, he finally reaches a point of acceptance. At the end of the final battle, he absorbs the disembodied, hate-filled spirit of Mikage into his own body, accepting the "shadow of love" and allowing it to rest within him. This act of forgiveness and acceptance is his final development, bringing his own 24,000-year-old emotional arc to a close. With the conflict resolved and the cycle broken, he lifts his long-standing decree with the simple declaration that "love is now permitted," symbolizing the new era that has begun.

Fudo Zen possesses several notable abilities that go beyond standard military command. His most remarkable trait is his immortality and apparent reincarnation, having persisted across the ages from the time of Apollonius to the present day. He has an innate, supernatural understanding of Aquarion and the ability to perceive the past lives, hidden powers, and true names of others. He can appear and disappear at will, and at one point, he demonstrates the ability to directly guide a character while being completely invisible to them. While he rarely engages in direct combat, his power is more conceptual; he can manipulate the battlefield through sheer force of will and profound knowledge, forcing reality and destiny to align with his plans. His most powerful act is his final one, absorbing the tormented soul of his eternal enemy and granting it peace, a feat of spiritual power that requires tens of thousands of years of accumulated will.
