Description
Kagura Demuri is a central figure in Aquarion EVOL, originating from the world of Altair, a dimension without women. His existence is defined by a tumultuous past, a wild nature, and an obsessive pursuit of a single individual, which drives much of the story's conflict. He serves as a rival pilot and a dark counterpart to the protagonist, Amata Sora.

Kagura's background is rooted in tragedy and manipulation. He was not born in the slums of Altair as initially believed, but was created through the machinations of the sinister priest, Mykage. As a child, the boy who would become Amata was torn in two by Mykage: one half, paralyzed by fear, remained on Earth and grew up as Amata, while the other half, embodying impulsive courage, chased after his mother through a dimensional gate to Altair. This "dark half" was found by Mykage, who erased his memories and named him Kagura Demuri, raising him in an environment of abuse and manipulation to serve his own ends. This harsh upbringing, which included being caged and tortured to unlock his latent powers, left him profoundly lonely and desperate for genuine acceptance.

Personality-wise, Kagura is aggressive, hot-blooded, stubborn, and cocky, often described as beast-like in his demeanor. He has a ferocious love for battle and a rebellious streak, frequently ignoring orders from his superiors. Despite this tough exterior, he possesses a softer, more vulnerable side that is almost exclusively revealed in the presence of Mikono Suzushiro. His social skills are notably poor due to his isolated and abusive childhood; he is blunt, crude, and often fails to understand normal social etiquette. His speech, when he becomes emotional or nervous, is involuntarily reversed due to his elemental power, causing him to say the opposite of what he intends. For example, his deep affection for Mikono often comes out as threats to harm or kill her, which leads to frequent and painful misunderstandings.

Kagura's primary motivation is his overwhelming and almost primal fixation on Mikono Suzushiro. He is drawn to her by her scent, which he claims to recognize from a past life, and he relentlessly refers to her as his "wench." His pursuit of her is not merely lust; it is a desperate, lonely soul's quest for love and acceptance. He is convinced that Mikono is the key to fulfilling an ancient legend and filling the void left by his abusive upbringing. This obsession drives him to invade Earth repeatedly, disobey direct orders, and even turn against his own allies. He despises Amata, seeing him as a weak and useless coward who failed to protect their mother, and the two are locked in a bitter rivalry for Mikono's affection. In truth, they are two halves of the same original soul, making their conflict a form of self-loathing.

Throughout the story, Kagura serves as a primary antagonist and rival. He is a formidable enemy to the heroes of Neo-DEAVA, piloting the beast-like mecha, the Mithra Gnis. His role evolves from a simple abductor to a tragic figure whose chaotic nature is used as a pawn by Mykage. His key relationships are fraught with conflict. With Mykage, he is a manipulated and abused surrogate son. With Jin Muso, a childhood friend and fellow soldier, he shares a bond of camaraderie, though Jin often has to temper Kagura's reckless behavior. The most significant relationship is with Mikono, who, despite his threatening behavior, instinctively feels a sense of deja vu and a need to apologize to him, creating a complex and mystifying dynamic. By the series' end, the revelation of his shared origin with Amata forces a change, and he eventually moves past his rivalry to assist his other self.

Kagura possesses several notable abilities. His most basic power is an extraordinarily enhanced sense of smell, which he can use to track individuals across vast distances, even sensing the souls of their reincarnations. He is a highly skilled soldier, proficient in acrobatics, brawling, and piloting. After being forcibly awakened by Mykage, he manifests two more potent abilities. The first is the Power of Reversal, which allows him to reverse any physical phenomena. This includes deflecting attacks, reversing gravity, and even undoing the effects of other Elemental powers. A tragic side effect is the involuntary reversal of his own words when he is emotionally compromised. His second ability is a physical transformation into a large, powerful black wolf, a manifestation of his inner, primal nature that he can assume when extremely agitated.

Kagura undergoes significant development, from a one-dimensional, feral antagonist to a more sympathetic figure who begins to understand his own fractured identity. His journey is one of seeking connection in a world that has only offered him pain, and his ultimate acceptance of his origins allows him to find a measure of peace. In the epilogue of the series, he finds a new, more stable relationship with the former rival, Zessica Wong, suggesting he has finally found the acceptance he craved outside of his obsession with Mikono.
