Description
Makoto Hyoudou is a supporting character in The Knight in the Area, known as a midfielder for Enoshima High School's soccer team. He is a teenage boy with short blonde hair and brown eyes, and is often addressed by the nickname Mako-chan. His background begins with his membership in the Enoshima Football Club, where he participated in recruiting first-year students and first encountered the protagonist Kakeru Aizawa and Nana Mishima. After the conflict between the FC and the school's soccer club was resolved, Hyoudou became a regular midfielder for the Enoshima team, wearing the number 8 jersey.
Hyoudou's personality is layered. In everyday interactions, he presents an easygoing and smiling demeanor, which makes him approachable. However, on the soccer field, he displays a cold and ruthless attitude toward opponents. He holds a firm belief that winning is everything and that soccer has no place for weak players, and he will go to great lengths to eliminate those he considers weak. This competitive drive is fueled largely by the intense pressure from his father, who serves as the coach of Enoshima High School's soccer team and demands nothing less than victory from his son. The relationship between father and son is strained, as Hyoudou feels he is treated merely as a winning machine rather than as a child. To meet these expectations, he trains relentlessly and maintains strict self-discipline.
Despite his harsh exterior, Hyoudou has a deeply caring side, particularly toward his younger sister, who is terminally ill. His love for her reveals a more human and vulnerable aspect of his character, contrasting with the persona he projects during matches. This dual nature makes him a complex figure in the story.
As a player, Hyoudou is a box-to-box midfielder, meaning he is an all-rounder capable of both defending and attacking. His skills on the field are notable, and he acts as a strong rival to the protagonist Kakeru Aizawa, providing a secondary focus in the narrative. Through his rivalry with Kakeru and his personal struggles with familial expectations and his sister's illness, Hyoudou experiences subtle growth, though he remains a persistent challenger throughout the series.
