Description
Cubic G, also known as Cubic Galois, is a central character in the anime Phi-Brain - Puzzle of God. He is a young student at Root Academy, attending the middle school division, and holds the prestigious solver title of Edison, marking him as a candidate for the status of genius known as the Golden Brain. His name is a combination of the Rubik's Cube and the renowned mathematician Évariste Galois. Physically, Cubic is short in stature for his age, with short blonde hair and blue eyes. His distinctive appearance is defined by his habit of wearing a long white lab coat over his school uniform, which consists of a light yellow vest, blue trousers, and a green tie.
Initially, Cubic holds a strong disdain for puzzles, believing that a true genius should not waste time solving them but should instead focus on mathematics and inventions that can meaningfully benefit humanity. He considers numbers to be his only friends and is a self-proclaimed genius very confident in his own intellectual abilities. This perspective makes him appear self-centered and arrogant, though this is largely a result of his youth and immaturity rather than genuine malice. He is also an inventor, earning him his Edison title, and frequently creates various robotic devices to assist him. His primary motivation changes upon witnessing the protagonist, Kaito Daimon, solve a deadly Puzzle of God using a mysterious power called the Phi-Brain. From that moment, Cubic becomes intensely interested in studying Kaito, shifting his focus from general mathematics to understanding the unique abilities of the solver he now admires.
In the story, Cubic serves as an ally to Kaito and the other main solvers. He first appears in the third episode, attempting to convince Kaito to abandon puzzle-solving and join his research, even going so far as to attach a device to Kaito to prevent him from using his puzzle-solving abilities. After observing Kaito solve a complex city-wide puzzle, his opinion changes dramatically, and he becomes a key member of the group, often providing technological support and information. His role frequently involves using his hacking skills to infiltrate the network of the mysterious organization POG (Puzzle of God) and using his inventions to monitor Kaito's brain waves and physical condition to collect data on the effects of the Orpheus armband.
His key relationships center on his fascination with Kaito Daimon, whom he respects and follows closely, a behavior that initially leads others to mistake him for a stalker. He has a friendly, if sometimes exasperated, relationship with Nonoha Ito, who gives him the nickname Q-chan, which he is known to dislike. Gammon Sakanoue also gives him the nickname Q-taro. Despite his earlier feelings of superiority, he develops a cooperative friendship with other geniuses, such as Souji Jikukawa, working alongside him to hack into the POG's systems. In a moment of self-doubt, he questions whether he has the right to be Kaito's friend after being defeated by the genius of a rival, but he ultimately overcomes this to become a trusted comrade.
Throughout the series, Cubic experiences notable development. He begins as a loner who believes only in mathematics but evolves into a loyal and integral member of a team. His early arrogance gives way to a more grounded understanding of friendship and his own place among other geniuses. By the third season, he has fully committed to the fight against the threat of Orpheus, inventing a new robot named Iwashimizu and developing a system specifically designed to defeat Orpheus. Even as his prominence in the main plot lessens in later arcs, he remains a steadfast and observant supporter of Kaito's journey.
Cubic's notable abilities lie in his incredible intellect, particularly in the fields of mathematics and invention. As the title Edison suggests, he is a prolific inventor, creating a series of robotic assistants, including Mr. Okabe, Mr. Yoshio, and Mr. Iwashimizu, the last of which is capable of communication. He also designs and builds specialized vehicles for himself. Beyond his mechanical aptitude, Cubic is a highly skilled computer hacker, able to breach the secure networks of a powerful organization like POG to gather crucial intelligence and hidden files for his friends. He is also known to have created devices such as a wristwatch tranquilizer gun.
