Description
Fam Fan Fan is a fifteen-year-old sky pirate from the floating town of Kartoffel and serves as the central character of her story. She was orphaned as an infant when the vanship carrying her parents crashed; she was the sole survivor, discovered by the sky pirates who would become her adoptive family. Raised by the pirate clan led by Atamora Collette, she grew up alongside her step-sister and eventual navigator, Giselle Collette, though she privately longs to find her lost family and carries a special amulet as the only clue to her heritage. Her background holds a significant secret: she is the biological granddaughter of Sadri, a high-ranking marshal of the Ades Federation, and the spitting image of her late mother, Raha.

In personality, Fam is defined by her cheerful, excitable, and remarkably resilient nature. She is a classic plucky girl, as nothing seems to keep her down for long, and she faces danger with a daring overconfidence that borders on fearlessness. Fam is deeply altruistic and supportive, driven by a core inability to leave anyone in trouble behind. This sense of honor leads her to make bold promises and form contracts to help those in need. She is also noted for her brutal honesty and complete lack of tact, often speaking her mind without any filter, which can result in unintentionally harsh or inappropriate comments. While she is presented as something of an idiot hero who often succeeds against the odds, her optimism and straightforwardness make her a beloved figure among her peers. A particularly unusual personal quirk is her habit of sleepwalking; she will physically act out her dreams and has a tendency to wander out of vanships or rooms, requiring Giselle to tie her leg with a rope and bell as a precaution.

Fam's primary motivation is her profound love for a peaceful and free sky. She despises seeing the heavens turned into a battlefield and strives to fight without causing unnecessary deaths. Her greatest ambition is to see the revival of the Grand Race, an annual flying competition that was discontinued due to war. She believes the event could bring smiles back to people's faces and restore a sense of peace and unity. This dream is directly tied to her role in the story, as she hopes that by helping Princess Millia il Velch Cutrettola Turan reclaim her fallen kingdom, she can also find a way to bring the Grand Race back.

Fam's role in the narrative is set in motion when she and Giselle intervene in a battle between the Ades Federation and the Kingdom of Turan, rescuing Princess Millia. After Turan is conquered, Fam volunteers to become Millia's wings, vowing to help her reclaim her homeland. This promise leads her to make a daring contract with Captain Tatiana Wisla of the Silvius, agreeing to capture fifteen battleships—one for each year of her life—to build a new fleet for the deposed princess. Throughout the escalating conflict, Fam acts as a catalyst for change, delivering crucial messages, participating in high-stakes battles, and ultimately playing a key role in peace negotiations. Her actions help to end the war and set the stage for a new era.

Fam's key relationships are central to her development. Her most important partnership is with her navigator and step-sister, Giselle Collette, who acts as a grounding force, tempering Fam's reckless behavior while providing unwavering support. Her promise to Princess Millia forms the emotional core of the story, transforming from a simple contract into a deep friendship. She also shares a mentoring dynamic with the enigmatic and highly skilled vanship pilot Dio Eraclea. Later, she learns of her biological connection to Marshal Sadri of the Ades Federation, a revelation that ties her personal quest for family to the larger political conflict.

Over the course of the story, Fam develops from a skilled but inexperienced and somewhat reckless pirate into a mature individual whose actions directly influence the course of a world war. She begins as a hunter of sky-ships for profit but becomes a key figure in diplomatic and military campaigns, helping to deliver a treaty that ends the conflict and being hailed as a hero of the peace talks. Her journey also fulfills her personal dream, as the Grand Race is eventually re-instituted, though she places fourth rather than winning.

In terms of notable abilities, Fam is a highly talented and gifted pilot of a vespa vanship, second only to the legendary Dio Eraclea. Her skills are honed through her life as a sky pirate, where she specializes in "skyfish hunting"—capturing large airships for salvage. She is known among her crew for always being the first to cast the harpoon. In addition to her piloting prowess, Fam possesses practical engineering knowledge, allowing her to maintain and repair her own vanship and even understand the workings of capital-class warships, though she typically relies on Giselle's expertise for detailed tactical analysis.
