TV-Series
Description
Hirohide Nanba is a student at Tennouzu High School who becomes a notable antagonist within the student body during the series. He is first seen after the Lost Christmas catastrophe that quarantines Tokyo, and his actions play a significant role in the social breakdown within the school. Physically, he is characterized by his Tennouzu High uniform, dark brown hair, and a pair of glasses that give him an unassuming appearance, which contrasts with his aggressive behavior.
His personality is defined by a cruel and bullying nature. Nanba is depicted as an instigator of violence who enjoys harassing others, particularly those who are vulnerable or different. This is first demonstrated when he and his gang attempt to bully and sexually harass Ayase Shinomiya, a wheelchair-bound student, an act that is initially stopped by another student, Tsugumi. Nanba's behavior is driven by a desire for power and a willingness to exploit chaos for personal gain. He lacks loyalty to any cause or leader, instead aligning himself with whoever he perceives to be the strongest or most beneficial to his interests at the time.
In the story, Nanba first appears during the initial lockdown, where he and his gang seek to take advantage of the lawless atmosphere. After Shu Ouma becomes the class president and implements a strict Void Ranking System, which classifies students based on the power of their unique weapons, Nanba sees an opportunity. Because his own Void is a glove that can block or stop firearms, it is presumed to have a high ranking, and he quickly becomes a core member of Shu’s secret service, acting as a bodyguard to the new leader. However, his service is solely self-serving; he follows Shu only as long as it gives him authority over others.
His most pivotal action involves the former student council president, Arisa Kuhouin. While guarding her, Nanba is manipulated by Arisa, who makes a deal by having sex with him in exchange for revealing Shu’s dangerous secret: that extracting a person's Void can kill them if it is destroyed. This betrayal directly causes the student body to turn violently against Shu, leading to a full-scale rebellion within the school.
Nanba has several key relationships that define his arc. He is frequently seen with his associate, Takaomi Sudou, and together they lead a group of students who act on their violent impulses. His relationship with Shu Ouma is purely transactional, acting as a follower only when it serves his selfish desires. His interaction with Arisa Kuhouin is one of exploitation and betrayal, as she uses his baser instincts to manipulate him into undermining the school's regime.
His development in the series is not one of redemption but of escalating opportunism. He begins as a petty bully, rises to a position of power within Shu’s administration, and ultimately triggers the downfall of that administration through his betrayal. This trajectory is cut short when Gai Tsutsugami is revived. In a demonstration of overwhelming power, Gai kills Nanba and his entire gang by using their own Voids as components to form a devastating missile, which he then uses to destroy an oncoming aircraft.
Notable abilities include his physical strength for intimidation and his Void, which is manifested as a protective glove. Its specific function is to stop or negate attacks from firearms, a rare and powerful ability that secured him a high rank and a privileged position in the school's hierarchy.
