Description
Kio Asuno is the third protagonist of his generation in the Advanced Generation timeline, born in AGE.151 as the son of Asemu Asuno and Romary Asuno, and the grandson of Flit Asuno. Raised in the peaceful village of Olivernotes on Earth, Kio grew up without his father, who went missing on a mission shortly after his birth. He was brought up by his mother and grandfather, and from a very young age, Flit prepared him for a future as a Gundam pilot by giving him a mobile suit battle simulator disguised as a video game. This early training meant that by the time he was thrust into real combat at age thirteen, Kio possessed highly refined piloting skills, though his understanding of the true nature of war was dangerously naive.
In terms of personality, Kio initially comes across as a well-bred and kind-hearted boy with a strong sense of justice, always willing to help others in a crisis. However, his upbringing with the battle simulator caused him to perceive actual combat as a more serious version of a game, and he initially struggled to grasp the gravity of taking a human life. This disconnect often led him to act recklessly, a point of concern raised by his mentor, the Federation pilot Shanalua Mullen. Despite this, he was not malicious but simply innocent, speaking his mind without always understanding the consequences and believing wholeheartedly in the version of the enemy that his grandfather had taught him to hate.
Kio's role in the story is defined by this clash between his inherited purpose as a Gundam pilot and his own evolving moral compass. When the Vagans invaded Earth, Flit entrusted him with the Gundam AGE-3, a machine designed specifically to harness Kio's latent abilities. He is a powerful X-Rounder, a type of newtype-like spatial awareness ability, and his potential in this area was described as being on an unprecedented level, far surpassing even his grandfather's capabilities. Early on, he fought fiercely against the Vagans, driven by Flit's desire for vengeance and his own simplistic view of them as evil. His key relationships during this period include his grandfather Flit, who guided him; his father Asemu, whom he would later discover is alive and leading the space pirates Bisidian; his rival Zeheart Galette; and his mentor Shanalua, whose death deeply affected him.
The most significant turning point in Kio's development occurs when he is captured by the Vagans and taken to their homeland, Second Moon. While a prisoner, he was treated well by the Vagan leader, Ezelcant, but more importantly, he befriended the impoverished siblings Deen and Lu, a girl dying from the Mars Ray disease that plagues the Vagan people. Witnessing their suffering and Lu's eventual death shattered his black-and-white worldview, leading him to realize that the Vagans were not monsters, but desperate human beings with their own families and tragedies. This experience fundamentally changed his motivations for fighting.
After escaping and receiving the new Gundam AGE-FX, a machine built to match his immense X-Rounder reactions, Kio resolved to end the war without further bloodshed. He developed a unique fighting style where he used the Gundam's C-Funnels not to destroy enemy suits, but to disarm them by targeting only their heads or weapons, sparing the pilots' lives. This put him on a direct ideological collision course with his grandfather Flit, whose hatred for the Vagans had festered for decades and who sought their total annihilation. Kio's final and most important role was to stop his own grandfather, convincing him to abandon his genocidal plan and choose a path of coexistence.
Kio's notable abilities are centered on his exceptional X-Rounder powers, which grant him extraordinary spatial awareness, preternatural reaction times, and the ability to sense enemy attacks before they happen. His piloting skills, honed by years of simulator training, are so sharp that the Gundam AGE-3 was too slow to keep up with his reflexes, leading to its destruction and the subsequent development of the high-speed, funnel-equipped AGE-FX. His greatest skill, however, was not just destruction but precision, as he learned to use his overwhelming power to disable enemies without killing them, a testament to his matured belief in the value of all life. In the years following the war's end, Kio continued to work for peace as a civilian collaborator with the military.
