Description
Hanzou is a professional Hunter and a master ninja from Jappon, where he belongs to the secret Cloud-Hidden style. During the 287th Hunter Examination, he was applicant number 294 and was eighteen years old. His primary motivation for becoming a Hunter is to locate a legendary and elusive treasure known as the Hermit's Scroll, which he believes requires a Hunter license to obtain.

Physically, Hanzou is a bald young man with distinctive feathered eyebrows and a fit, athletic build. His typical attire includes a black shirt, grey pants, and white bandages wrapped around his wrists and ankles. Notably, concealed beneath the bandages on his forearms are small blades he can use for combat or torture.

Hanzou's personality is defined by a striking contradiction between his upbringing and his demeanor. As a ninja, he was trained from birth in rigorous and deadly arts, having already taken lives before the age of ten. Yet, he is unusually talkative and sociable, often displaying good spirits and even gullibility. He is prone to boasting about his skills, which can lead to overconfidence and carelessly revealing secrets. Despite this talkative nature, he maintains the heightened caution of a ninja, such as refusing any food or drink offered by others as a matter of ingrained habit. He can switch from a friendly chatterbox to a cold and focused fighter without hesitation, as shown during his final exam match when he brutally tortured Gon without any apparent qualms.

Hanzou plays a significant role in the Hunter Exam arc, where he is depicted as one of the most powerful and skilled applicants. He easily passes the first four phases of the exam, often noted for his exceptional abilities by examiners like Menchi. The defining moment of his character comes in the final phase of the exam. He is pitted against Gon Freecss in a match where the only way to win is to force the opponent to verbally admit defeat. Hanzou's speed, strength, and experience completely outclass Gon, and he quickly overpowers him. He repeatedly beats Gon and even breaks his arm, expecting him to surrender. However, Gon refuses to give up, and Hanzou is profoundly struck by the absence of hatred in Gon's eyes despite the torture. Realizing he has come to respect Gon's unwavering spirit, Hanzou makes the unexpected decision to forfeit the match, handing Gon the victory. He then easily defeats his next opponent, Pokkle, earning his Hunter license. After the exam, he gives his business card to Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio, offering to help them if they ever visit his country.

His key relationships were initially forged during the exam. He develops a deep respect for Gon, which is the primary reason for his surrender. He later appears during the 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc, where he visits the hospital to see the critically injured Gon and helps guard the facility. In the Succession Contest arc, he is recruited by Kurapika to serve as a bodyguard for the princes of the Kakin Empire. Hanzou is assigned to protect Prince Momoze but is ordered by the Queen to guard the younger Prince Marayam. During his absence, Momoze is assassinated. This event deeply affects Hanzou, who blames himself for failing to protect her and swears to avenge her death, a promise he fulfills by hunting down and executing the killer.

Hanzou undergoes noticeable development, transitioning from a confident and somewhat cocky examinee to a more responsible and emotionally invested professional. His early lesson about the nature of strength and spirit from Gon carries forward, and his later failure to protect Momoze adds a layer of personal guilt and a drive for justice that fuels his actions.

Regarding abilities, Hanzou is a master of the Cloud-Hidden style of ninjutsu. His raw physical prowess is immense; during the exam, Killua Zoldyck ranked his strength as above his own and only slightly below Hisoka's. He possesses superhuman speed, balance, and strength, can stun a person with a single blow, and is a skilled tracker. He is also an expert in torture techniques. After the Hunter Exam, he learned to use Nen, the life energy, in less than six months. His unique Nen ability, which he calls Hanzo Skill 4, is a form of分身术 or shadow clone technique. This ability allows him to project an astral copy of himself that can fly, become intangible to pass through solid objects, and act independently. While the clone is active, Hanzou's real body falls into a completely unconscious state. The ability can only be deactivated if the clone returns to the body or if someone touches or speaks to his real body.
