Description
Gittarackur is a disguise used by Illumi Zoldyck, the eldest son of the legendary Zoldyck family of assassins, during the 287th Hunter Examination. Illumi assumes this alias to conceal his true identity, employing special needles to completely restructure his facial features and alter his appearance beyond recognition. His motivation for participating in the exam is twofold: to obtain a Hunter License, which he requires for a particular assassination mission, and to secretly observe and monitor his younger brother, Killua, who has run away from home to take the same test.

In this disguised form, Gittarackur presents a strange and unsettling figure, with a face distorted by numerous pins. Despite this bizarre appearance, his underlying demeanor is calm, expressionless, and eerily cheerful, often speaking in an absent-minded tone even in tense situations. Throughout the early stages of the exam, he appears as a fellow applicant, interacting minimally with others while keeping a watchful eye on Killua and his friends. At one point, Gittarackur assists the magician Hisoka by guiding him to the next phase of the test using a transmitter. During the fourth phase on Zevil Island, he hunts his assigned target, eliminates another applicant who targets him, and then simply digs a hole to sleep in until the phase concludes.

The character's true role is revealed during the final phase of the Hunter Exam. When Killua is scheduled to fight Gittarackur, Illumi removes the needles, revealing his true face and identity to his brother. In this moment, his motivations become clear: he is there to enforce the family's will and ensure Killua remains on the path of an assassin. He psychologically torments Killua, asserting that his brother is nothing but a puppet whose only purpose is to kill, and that he is unfit to be a Hunter or to have friends like Gon. This confrontation reveals the twisted, possessive love Illumi holds for Killua, which he expresses through control and manipulation rather than affection. It is also revealed that Illumi is responsible for planting a special Nen needle in Killua's brain, a hypnotic command that forces Killua to flee from any battle he is not absolutely certain he can win. Illumi implanted this needle to protect Killua and ensure he survives to carry on the family business.

Gittarackur is not a separate personality but a direct extension of Illumi's true self: a ruthless, calculating, and highly skilled assassin. His abilities are rooted in Nen, the life energy used for supernatural powers in the world of Hunters. As a Manipulator-type Nen user, his primary weapons are needles infused with his aura. These needles have several functions: they can alter his own appearance and that of others, allowing for perfect disguises. More terrifyingly, he can embed needles into the skulls of living victims to completely control their actions, turning them into mindless puppets known as Needlemen who follow his orders without question until they die. He can also animate corpses to serve similarly complex functions, such as speaking or driving. His skill and power are considerable; a character notes that his combat rating is 95, a score higher than several elite Hunters.

The character's role in the story is primarily as an antagonist who personifies the dark and controlling nature of Killua's family. The psychological "needle" he implanted is a major obstacle for Killua, subtly influencing his decisions for a large portion of the series until Killua finally overcomes his fear and extracts it himself during a battle. This act marks a pivotal moment in Killua's development, representing his first true step toward independence from his family's control. Illumi shares an unusual and mutually beneficial relationship with the deadly magician Hisoka, whom he considers a friend despite their dangerous and unpredictable dynamic. They assist each other in their schemes, such as when Illumi disguised himself as Hisoka to act as a decoy within the Phantom Troupe, a notorious gang of thieves. His personal development, in contrast to characters like Killua, is a negative one of deepening obsession, as seen in later story arcs where he relentlessly pursues Killua, willing to harm other family members to maintain his control. Ultimately, the identity of Gittarackur serves as a perfect metaphor for Illumi himself: a deceptive surface hiding a far more dangerous and controlling reality beneath.
