Melody, known as Senritsu in the original Japanese, is a professional Music Hunter who first appears as a bodyguard for Neon Nostrade. Her past is defined by a singular, tragic encounter with a cursed musical composition. One night after drinking with a friend, she listened to a single movement of the flute solo from the Sonata of Darkness, a piece rumored to have been composed by a demonic entity. The music had a catastrophic effect; her friend, who played the piece, suffered severe bodily mutations and died, while Melody herself was physically deformed by its power. As a consequence of this curse, she gained extraordinary, supernatural hearing. This ability allows her to perceive sounds as faint as whispers or heartbeats from great distances, but her primary goal is not to exploit this power. Instead, she dedicates her life to finding the complete sheet music for the Sonata of Darkness so she can destroy it, ensuring no one else endures the same fate and hoping to reclaim her original body.

Melody has a short, stocky build and her appearance is markedly unconventional. Due to the Sonata of Darkness, her exposed skin is warped and distorted, a condition severe enough to startle those who see it. As a result, she almost always wears long sleeves, leggings, and a hat in public. Despite her unsettling physical features, her demeanor is consistently kind, gentle, and calm. She possesses a deep, intuitive perception of others’ emotions, which is heightened by her ability to hear the subtle rhythms of their hearts. This makes her exceptionally caring and trustworthy, as she can discern lies, fear, anger, and sincerity with unerring accuracy. For instance, she can identify a liar by the irregular tempo of their heartbeat or recognize a trained assassin like Killua by the near-silent quality of their footsteps.

As a Hunter, Melody is skilled in Nen and is classified as an Emitter. She channels her aura primarily through music. Her most notable technique involves playing a piece on her violin or flute called A Field in Spring. By emitting her aura through the melody, she can heal fatigue and illness in those who listen, while also creating a powerful soothing effect that calms heightened emotions and reduces stress. This ability is a direct extension of her personality, used for support and healing rather than outright combat, though she has proven agile and capable enough to defend herself when necessary.

In the story, Melody is introduced alongside Kurapika during the Yorknew City arc. She is hired as a bodyguard for Neon Nostrade, and her path quickly intertwines with Kurapika’s. She is one of the first people to see past his calm exterior, confronting him about the violent, wrathful rhythm of his heartbeat when he sees the Scarlet Eyes of his fallen Kurta clan members. This moment of vulnerability leads to a deep mutual trust. Melody becomes Kurapika’s confidante and emotional anchor, often using her music to pull him back from the brink of his all-consuming rage against the Phantom Troupe. Leorio, noticing this unique bond, asks her to look after Kurapika, a request she accepts willingly. Her role is primarily that of a supportive figure, using her enhanced hearing to track enemies, verify truths during hostage situations, and provide the emotional stability that allows her allies to function effectively. She later appears during the 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc as one of the visitors to a hospitalized Gon. Eventually, she becomes a bodyguard for Prince Kacho Hui Guo Rou, continuing her quiet mission to gather information and eventually destroy the cursed sonata that haunts her.
