Description
Shell, also known as Xie Lu or Xi Er, is a dim sum master from Shanxi famed as "Steel Staff Shell" for his heavy steel staff—a dual-purpose weapon and cooking implement engraved with yellow stars signifying victories against Super Chefs and one black star marking his defeat by Liu Mao Xing, a loss he vows to replace with a future triumph.
This nomadic chef first appears at Yang Spring Restaurant with a prideful, competitive spirit. Unimpressed by a poorly prepared vegetable dish, he demands the cook responsible and discovers Mao Xing's talent through a simple egg-based creation. Shell challenges Mao Xing to a culinary battle, loses, and humbly etches the black star onto his staff as a catalyst for growth.
Boisterous yet honorable, Shell judges others by actions rather than allegiances. He rescues Mira, the "Spice Queen" of the antagonistic Underground Cooking Society, from a near-fatal fall during their shared quest for the Legendary Cooking Utensils. Their mutual respect deepens into romantic love, enduring even after he learns of her society ties.
As a core member of Mao Xing's group, Shell aids in locating the Legendary Cooking Utensils. His contributions include confirming duplicate Seven Star Knives exist and clarifying that creator Lache was not murdered by ally Leon, resolving a critical misunderstanding. Shell’s combat skills and culinary expertise prove indispensable against the Underground Cooking Society.
Shell evolves from a solitary rival to a loyal teammate. Initially irritated by Shirou’s careless mistakes—like burning Shell’s travel funds—he gradually adopts a patient, mentorship role. His rigorous training from youth fosters exceptional athleticism and mathematical proficiency, aiding problem-solving during culinary battles.
His design draws inspiration from Qing Dynasty figure Pan Dingxin. The stars on his staff vary across adaptations: 26 in the 2019 anime and 27 in the 1997 version and manga.
