Description
Aiyumi Takahara is a central character in The World God Only Knows, introduced as a classmate of the protagonist, Keima Katsuragi, at Maijima Private High School. She is a 17-year-old student in class 2-B with a birthday on May 2nd. Physically, Aiyumi has a slim and athletic build suited to her life as a dedicated runner, with short light brown hair and bright brown eyes. A distinctive habit of hers is to tie her hair back whenever she is about to engage in serious running, a detail that becomes significant in understanding her character.

Personality-wise, Aiyumi is defined by her vibrant cheerfulness, strong will, and remarkable athletic ability. She is the star runner of the school's track and field team, known for her incredible speed, which has earned her the nickname Mai-High's Unguided Missile. Her energetic nature often translates into reckless behavior; she is frequently depicted running at full speed through the school hallways, leading her to collide with walls or other people. Aiyumi is outgoing, competitive, and straightforward, not afraid to speak her mind or scold Keima for his odd behavior. However, beneath this confident exterior lies a core of insecurity. Despite her athletic prowess, she struggles with self-doubt, particularly regarding her position on the track team and her identity as a girl, occasionally feeling overshadowed by those she perceives as more traditionally feminine. She also claims to have been more academically successful in the past, but her devotion to running has caused her grades to decline.

Aiyumi’s primary motivation throughout the story is to overcome the pressures and self-doubt that plague her athletic career. Initially, this internal conflict, exacerbated by pressure from older, jealous upperclassmen, creates a gap in her heart that allows a runaway spirit to possess her. This situation sets the stage for her role as Keima's first real-world conquest target. Later, her motivations expand as she becomes a key figure in the battle against the rogue demon faction Vintage. As the host of the goddess Mercury, Aiyumi is driven to protect her friends and help defeat this common enemy, requiring her to confront her true feelings for Keima a second time.

In the story, Aiyumi serves as Keima's first capture target, which establishes the fundamental premise of the series. Unlike many subsequent targets, she already knows Keima, making her conquest more personal and dynamic. Her initial capture arc is brief but effective, with Keima helping her realize that she was faking an injury to avoid the pressure of competition, and encouraging her to face her problems head-on. Her role becomes significantly more important during the Goddesses Arc, where she is revealed to be the last of the six goddess hosts. This forces Keima to reconquer her heart, but under much more difficult circumstances, as she retains memories of their previous interactions and distrusts his motives. Beyond her role in the main plot, Aiyumi is also a member of the light music band 2-B Pencils, led by her friend Chihiro Kosaka, where she plays the guitar.

Aiyumi shares several key relationships. Her connection with Keima is the most significant, evolving from annoyance and mockery to genuine affection, and her ability to move past feeling toyed with during the reconquest demonstrates her emotional maturity. She also forms a strong friendship with the demon Elsie, who assists Keima in his captures. Aiyumi's friendship with Chihiro is also crucial, especially during the Goddesses Arc, where Chihiro helps facilitate her re-conquest and Aiyumi in turn offers support for Chihiro's own romantic feelings.

Aiyumi undergoes considerable development over the course of the series. She begins as an insecure girl who runs away from her problems, literally faking an injury to avoid the possibility of failure. Through her initial conquest, she learns to face her challenges directly and trust in her own abilities. Later, as a goddess host, she grows from a girl who was a conquest target into a powerful ally and a more emotionally complex individual. She is forced to distinguish between fabricated romance and real feelings, ultimately accepting her love for Keima on her own terms, which allows the goddess Mercury to fully awaken. This journey makes her one of the most well-developed heroines, and while she does not end up in a romantic relationship with Keima, her final interactions with him are marked by a bittersweet maturity and understanding.

Aiyumi’s notable abilities are primarily physical. Her defining skill is her incredible running speed and agility, which makes her a formidable track athlete. As the host of the goddess Mercury, she gains enhanced strength and abilities, which are crucial in the final battles against Vintage. The official guide book rates her with maximum scores in fitness, sociability, asset, and will power, while her studies remain low, reflecting her athletic focus. Her speed is so great that it can be a double-edged sword, as she often struggles to stop, leading to her comedic collisions. She is also musically inclined enough to play the guitar in a band.
