TV-Series
Description
Haqua du Lot Herminium is a demon from New Hell and a central figure in the story, serving as the tritagonist. She holds the position of District Chief of Area 32 in Nagumo City, operating under the Runaway Spirit Squad with the rank of First-Class Public Affairs Demon. Her physical appearance is marked by long, freely flowing blue-violet hair that reaches her waist. She typically wears a reddish-brown dress paired with a thistle-colored mini skirt, matching stockings, and high heels, along with a choker featuring a large chain at the front. A defining piece of her equipment is the Scythe of Testament, a weapon awarded to her as the valedictorian of her graduating class, which historically was a distinction reserved for demons of noble families.

In terms of personality, Haqua is defined by a firm sense of pride and an intense drive for perfection. Having graduated at the top of her class and being labeled a genius, she holds herself to extremely high standards and is very harsh on her own perceived failures. She is aggressive and independent, often reluctant to accept assistance from others, and goes to considerable lengths to conceal any faults or shortcomings to maintain her reputation as a top achiever. Her pride is initially a significant flaw, as seen when she lies to her friend Elsie about capturing ten runaway spirits when she has actually captured none. Despite her tough exterior, she has a soft spot for those close to her, particularly Elsie. She also has a noted tendency to be too honest and trusting of others, as remarked upon by fellow demon Nora. Later in the narrative, Haqua develops romantic feelings for Keima Katsuragi, the protagonist, which adds a personal layer to their complex partnership; however, these feelings are not overtly reciprocated.

Haqua's background explains much of her driven personality. She was a perfect student from a young age, studying incessantly and achieving the number one position in her class, which led her to feel superior to others. This background directly fuels her crisis of confidence when she enters the workforce. Her primary motivation stems from a deep-seated need to live up to her own reputation and the expectations set by her academic success. She is determined to prove that her theoretical knowledge can translate into practical results as a member of the Runaway Spirit Squad. This struggle between her book-smart intelligence and the unpredictable reality of capturing loose souls is a central conflict for her character. After being fired from her position for speaking out about the organization Vintage, her motivation shifts towards protecting Keima and clearing her name.

Within the story’s second season, Haqua initially serves as a rival and mirror to Elsie, the deuteragonist. Her introduction forces a direct comparison in their capture rates, which wounds her pride and creates a vulnerability that a runaway spirit exploits, possessing her. This event, and her subsequent rescue through Elsie's kindness, helps her begin to reconcile her self-worth with her performance. Her role evolves significantly as she becomes a key ally to Keima. She replaces Elsie as Keima's partner on Earth, even disguising herself as Elsie at school to help him search for goddesses hiding within human hosts. During this time, she lives in his household, which deepens their working relationship and her personal feelings for him. She also becomes a protector, using her combat skills to shield Keima from threats posed by the organization Vintage.

Key relationships heavily influence Haqua's development. Her bond with Elsie de Lute Irma is the most significant; though she initially refuses to admit their friendship due to Elsie's flunking academic record, Elsie remains her best friend and role model, and the positive influence of Elsie’s unwavering support helps Haqua overcome her periods of darkness and inferiority. Her relationship with Keima is a complex blend of irritation and respect. While she finds his single-minded obsession with dating games frustrating, she comes to respect his strategic intellect and his understanding of the human heart. This partnership is mutually beneficial, as Keima provides the analytical plans to capture souls while Haqua supplies the magical power and combat ability to execute them. Her relationship with her assigned partner, Yukie Marui, also plays a role in her growth. Initially dismissive of Yukie’s seemingly lazy methods, Haqua learns to appreciate her partner's effective strategy of mass conquest, which results in Haqua successfully capturing multiple spirits.

Throughout the series, Haqua undergoes a notable character arc. She begins as a prideful academic genius who struggles with real-world application and is nearly destroyed by the gap between her expectations and her results. Through her failures, the support of her friends, and her experiences on Earth, she develops into a more balanced and resilient individual. She learns that true strength involves accepting help and that her worth is not solely defined by a perfect record. By the end of her story, she is reinstated to her position and continues to serve as a District Chief, having matured from a rigid honor student into a capable and respected demon.

In terms of notable abilities, Haqua possesses a wide array of magical powers that mark her as a gifted demon. Her combat prowess is highlighted by her expert use of the Scythe of Testament, with which she can generate and skillfully control intense azure flames for close-quarters combat and as mid-range projectiles. She can channel multiple spells simultaneously, at one point managing twenty different types to fly at high velocity even after losing her hagoromo, which is the scarf-like garment that serves as a demon's primary tool. Her hagoromo abilities include flight, creating dolls, and changing the appearance of objects. A unique and specialized skill is her ability to perform video playbacks of past events, a form of psychometry that allows her to gather information from a specific location covering approximately a few days. While highly intelligent and academically talented, her practical application of this knowledge is something she struggles with initially but eventually improves upon. On Earth, she also proves to be a far better cook than Elsie, showcasing a domestic talent that contrasts with her fearsome combat abilities.
