Description
Abeno Seimei, later known as Nue, is the primary antagonist of the final arc of the story and the founder of the Gokadoin House. This character is based on the historical figure of the same name, a legendary onmyouji from the Heian Era. In the world of the series, he is the son of Hagoromo-Gitsune, a powerful fox yokai, and Abe no Yasuna, a human.
Seimei's personality is defined by his manipulative and authoritative nature. He is a master of deception, presenting a facade of warmth and friendliness while hiding his true, sadistic intentions. His primary driving motivation is the desire for eternal life, which he seeks to achieve through a resurrection technique that requires his mother to give birth to him repeatedly across different eras. Initially, his wish for immortality was born from a desire to create a perfect world where humans and yokai could coexist peacefully. However, this goal was shattered a thousand years ago when a court noble, Yorimichi, killed a fox who was secretly his mother, hoping to use its liver for eternal youth. Enraged by this act and the subsequent desecration of her body, Seimei massacred the court and his ideology shifted. He decided that the world must be purified and that order could only be maintained if yokai ruled over humans.
Within the story, Seimei serves as the ultimate threat. He is first introduced when Hagoromo-Gitsune gives birth to his reincarnation during the Kyoto arc. Upon emerging, he demonstrates his immense power by effortlessly breaking the protagonist Rikuo Nura's legendary sword, Nenekirimaru. His plan is to destroy the current Kyoto and rebuild it into a new capital under his rule. His role expands further in the subsequent arc, where he returns from Hell with an army of oni, seeking to fully manifest his power and enact his vision of order on the world.
A key relationship in Seimei's story is with his mother, Hagoromo-Gitsune. Despite her being essential to his plans for reincarnation, he is ultimately willing to sacrifice and even destroy her to achieve his goals, showing he has no remaining attachments to her. He is also the ancestor of the Keikain house, a family of onmyouji, and considers his descendants as his children, thanking them for protecting the site of his return. His development is largely static, as he is a fully realized villain. The most significant change in his character occurred in the past, when his mother's death corrupted his noble intentions into a ruthless desire for yokai supremacy. In the present, he remains a supremely confident and powerful being who is rarely surprised, though he acknowledges when his body is not yet ready to fully handle the human world.
Seimei's notable abilities are vast and place him far above most other characters. He is a genius of onmyodo, the mystical art of divination and exorcism, and is also renowned as a master astrologer. His most devastating power is astronomical manipulation, which allows him to control the movement of celestial bodies. He can use this ability to shift planets, creating overwhelming gravitational forces capable of crushing entire armies or potentially threatening all of humanity. He is also proficient in forbidden arts, including hexes to kill people and techniques to manipulate yokai. Furthermore, he developed the Eternal Rebirth technique, which he uses offensively in battle and which facilitates his own cycle of reincarnation.
