Description
Kejōrō, whose human name was Kino, is a yōkai from the Nura Clan who serves as a loyal attendant to the young master Rikuo Nura. In her former life, she was an attendant to an oiran, a high-ranking courtesan named Shiragiku in the Yoshiwara pleasure district. During that time, she became close friends with a young man who frequently visited the district, a boy who would later become the yōkai known as Kubinashi. Her own transformation into a yōkai is linked to her past, and she reportedly does not hold fond feelings regarding the manner of her change, choosing instead to celebrate her human birthday.
In terms of personality, Kejōrō is generally cheerful, kind, and friendly, often behaving in a youthful and occasionally flirtatious manner. She is notably devoted to Rikuo Nura, acting as a loyal servant of the clan and showing visible concern whenever he is in danger or distress. However, this pleasant demeanor shifts dramatically when she enters combat, where she reveals a bloodthirsty and ruthless side, demonstrating a clear enjoyment for battle. Despite her fierce fighting spirit, she is perceptive to the emotions of those close to her, particularly regarding Kubinashi, for whom she harbors deep affection. It is hinted that this love is reciprocated, and information indicates that the two are engaged.
Kejōrō's primary role within the Nura household involves handling kitchen duties, including cleaning dishes, though she is far from a mere servant. During the Shikoku Arc, she was assigned as one of Rikuo's personal bodyguards, keeping watch over him while he attended school. In the Kyoto Arc, she traveled with Rikuo's group to the ancient capital, where she played a crucial role in supporting her allies during a desperate battle against the forces of Hagoromo-Gitsune. Her most significant action in this arc was intervening when Kubinashi, consumed by his past and a lust for revenge, went on a destructive rampage; Kejōrō followed him and successfully snapped him out of his suicidal depression, reminding him of their shared history.
Her bond with Kubinashi is the most defining relationship in her existence. Their connection spans from their human lives to their current states as yōkai, and they have fought together as a tag-team for a very long time. Her loyalty to him is so profound that she once offered to give up her own life in exchange for his when he was defeated by Rihan Nura, Rikuo's father. Beyond this, she maintains a respectful and protective relationship with Rikuo and interacts with other members of the Hyakki Yakō, such as the kappa Itaku, though she is often seen trying to mediate arguments, usually between Kubinashi and Itaku. Her physical appearance, with her long brown hair and white kimono, often leads the human members of the Kiyojūji Paranormal Investigation Squad to mistakenly believe she is Rikuo's older sister.
Kejōrō possesses considerable combat experience and primarily fights by manipulating her own hair as a weapon. She can extend and control her hair to great lengths, using it to entangle, lash, or constrict her opponents, and its strength is sufficient to hold a full-grown person like Kubinashi without difficulty. Occasionally, she also wields a pair of iron fans, known as tessen, in battle. Her most notable technique is Midaregami, Asobi Onna no Mai, a powerful attack that translates to "Unraveled Hair, Dance of the Courtesan," in which she unleashes a massive torrent of hair to overwhelm and envelop her enemies.
