TV-Series
Description
Kurotabō is a yōkai of the Nura Clan, recognized as an assault commander and often called the Assassin and Destruction Monk. He stands tall with long blue-black hair and blue eyes, presenting the appearance of a young man in his early twenties, and is typically clad in a black monk’s robe with a conical straw hat topped by a diamond-shaped finial. His existence began not through natural yōkai processes but as a manifestation born from the collective will of orphaned children during famine and war. Their desperate hopes for protection gave shape to a dark-garbed protector, and this origin left him with an underlying compassion for vulnerable humans despite an outwardly detached demeanor that insists he does not care about people.
Within the clan, Kurotabō originally served under the second head, Rihan Nura, and later became a close attendant to Rikuo Nura from the latter’s childhood. In those early years he was a frequent target of young Rikuo’s pranks, and he remains a quietly watchful presence as Rikuo matures. He often operates in tandem with Aotabō, the other assault commander, forming a contrasting pair where Kurotabō’s calm, stoic, and observant nature balances Aotabō’s more boisterous personality. When blending into human society, he adopts the alias “Kuro,” a small sign of his gradual acceptance of the human world.
Throughout the turmoil in Kyoto caused by Hagoromo Gitsune and her forces, Kurotabō plays an active role in both direct combat and support missions. He joins the rescue of captured allies, fights alongside the Keikain onmyōji, and demonstrates his combat style centered on the hidden arsenal concealed within his robes. Using a technique described as hidden weapons of the dark, he can produce an array of blades and implements without warning, turning his sleeves into a limitless armory. His most significant contribution in this arc occurs when he lends his fear to Rikuo during a decisive encounter. By entrusting his personal youkai essence in the technique known as fear-wrapping, Kurotabō empowers his young master with a torrent of weaponized attacks that overwhelms an opponent whose own style relies on countless sword slashes.
Despite his formidable presence in battle, Kurotabō undergoes a subtle evolution in his outlook. The distance he keeps from humanity erodes as he consistently protects people like Torii and his classmates, and his own mythical birth from children’s hopes underscores an instinct to safeguard the weak. He remains a steadfast and crucial figure in the Nura Clan’s front lines, combining the silent lethality of a monk-warrior with a loyalty that connects the clan’s past under Rihan to its future under Rikuo.
