Description
Bronk Stone, known in the original Japanese version as Tetsuo Takeda, is a main supporting character in the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL. He is a thirteen-year-old student at Heartland Academy and counts Yuma Tsukumo, the protagonist, as one of his closest friends. Bronk has a unique and recognizable appearance that contrasts with the slimmer designs of many other characters in the series. He is typically seen wearing a baseball cap backward, with his dark hair sticking out from the front and sides. His school uniform consists of a red and white shirt with a red tie, blue pants, and black suspenders decorated with round metal orbs. In casual settings, he wears an orange t-shirt that features a large smiley face on the front.
Bronk possesses a personality that is both competitive and grounded. He is known for being adamant and slightly mischievous, sometimes taking pleasure in the embarrassment of his friends, particularly when Yuma overestimates his abilities. Despite this playful competitiveness, he is a fiercely loyal and supportive companion. He often doubts Yuma's chances of winning a duel but cheers him on nonetheless and consistently stands by his side. Bronk is also a strong-willed individual who dislikes openly displaying his emotions. He tends to downplay his own kind actions, such as when he secretly retrieved the broken half of Yuma's pendant after it was destroyed and simply claimed to have found it by accident. His willpower is notably strong, demonstrated when he used Yuma's Number 39: Utopia to save his friend from the malevolent Number 96. While wielding the Number card, he was able to quickly resist its corrupting influence, an effect that overwhelms most other duelists, though this may have been partly due to him holding the Emperor's Key at the time.
As a duelist, Bronk is experienced and serves as a skilled benchmark for his friends. He utilizes a Machine-type Deck, often referred to as a Clockwork or Tinplate deck. This deck focuses on the manipulation of Tinplate Counters through specific Spell and Trap Cards to grant his Machine monsters additional attack power. His signature monster is Tinplate Archduke. Bronk has a long-standing rivalry with Yuma, having defeated him dozens of times in practice duels before the series' events, which gave him a sense of seniority over Yuma's often reckless dueling style. However, in official on-screen duels, he often finds himself outmatched by stronger foes.
Within the story, Bronk acts as a founding member of the Numbers Club, a group established by Yuma's friends to help investigate the mysterious Number cards and support Yuma in his quest to collect them. His primary motivation is to be a steady and reliable friend to Yuma, Tori Meadows, and the others. His role often involves providing commentary on duels, trying to keep Yuma out of trouble, and acting as a practical voice of reason, even if that voice is frequently ignored. One of his key relationships is with his friend Tori Meadows, with whom he often teams up to follow Yuma on his adventures. He also develops a notable and persistent crush on Rio Kastle, the sister of his rival Shark. Unlike the fleeting attractions of other background characters, Bronk's feelings for Rio continue for a significant portion of the series.
Throughout the series, Bronk experiences subtle but clear development. He begins as a somewhat arrogant bully, looking down on Yuma for his lack of skill. Over time, he witnesses Yuma's incredible growth, courage, and never-give-up attitude, which transforms their relationship into a deep and respectful friendship. He learns to forgive Yuma for breaking promises, such as when Yuma lied about using the power of Numbers, and grows from a rival who enjoys Yuma's failures into a protector who is willing to duel a dangerous entity like Number 96 to save him. He transitions from merely watching from the sidelines to actively participating in dangerous situations, proving his bravery and strong will.
