Description
In the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal, the character known as ESPer Robin is the on-screen persona of a young actor named Fuya Okudaira, who is also referred to in some versions as Nelson Andrews. Fuya is the star of a popular in-universe television show called "Different Dimension ESPer Robin," where he plays the titular heroic character, a valiant and powerful warrior from another dimension. However, away from the cameras, Fuya's real personality is a stark contrast to his fictional counterpart. He is depicted as a timid, shy, and lonely boy who is easily frightened by things like spiders. His life is heavily controlled and directed by his mother, leaving him feeling isolated and pressured by the demands of his stardom. This deep sense of loneliness and the inability to live up to the brave hero he portrays on screen are at the core of his character's motivations.

Fuya's role in the story begins when Astral, fascinated by the idea of a hero from another dimension, becomes convinced that the fictional Robin might hold the key to his lost memories. Yuma Tsukumo, trying to humor Astral, arranges to meet the actor, and the two boys quickly form a bond. This friendship makes Fuya’s internal pain more apparent, as he admits he is nothing like his heroic alter ego. This emotional vulnerability sets the stage for his primary conflict in the series. He becomes possessed by a powerful Number card, Number 83: Galaxy Queen. Under its influence, Fuya loses his identity and fully becomes ESPer Robin, believing himself to be the actual hero and using his dueling skills to attack others in a misguided attempt to enact justice.

The key relationship in this arc is, therefore, with Yuma Tsukumo. Yuma recognizes that Fuya is not evil but is being controlled and manipulated by the Number’s power. Their duel is not simply a battle but an intervention, with Yuma fighting to defeat the Galaxy Queen and free his new friend from its control. This event serves as Fuya's major character development. By being saved through their duel, he is able to separate his own identity from the fictional character he plays. The possession represents the ultimate loss of self due to the overwhelming pressure of his public image, and his rescue allows him to begin reclaiming his own life.

In terms of abilities, when Fuya is acting as ESPer Robin, he becomes a formidable duelist. Both his real-life dueling style and the fictional Robin's cards are based on the "Sparrow Family" archetype, also known as the "Robin Family". This deck features monsters based on the characters from his TV show, with the main ace being D.D. ESPer Star Robin. The deck's strategy focuses on swarming the field with these "Sparrow" monsters to perform powerful Fusion Summons, such as D.D. Jet Iron, or high-Rank Xyz Summons. While under the control of the Number card, he also commands Galaxy Queen, whose sinister power is what warps his heroic persona into a real threat. Thus, ESPer Robin is ultimately a tragic figure—a lonely child whose fictional heroism becomes a prison, from which he must be rescued by a true friend.
