TV-Series
Description
Kiyomasa Senji, also known by his codename Crow, is a Deadman prisoner originally held in the G Ward block of a privately owned prison facility. He is a tall, muscular man with tanned skin and short, spiked black hair, an appearance that suits his bird-like nickname. Following a defeat in a mandated fight, he lost his right eye as a penalty and subsequently wears a black eyepatch. He has the letters DSMK tattooed above his remaining eye, a permanent memorial to fallen comrades from his past.
Before being incarcerated, Senji worked as a police officer. After a catastrophic earthquake, he and his fellow officers, including his mentor Domon, worked to maintain order in the chaos. During this time, Senji already possessed his Branch of Sin ability. Their effectiveness made them targets, and his entire squad was eventually killed in a confrontation they undertook without him. Domon, dying, imparted a crucial lesson about responsibility and the importance of presenting a proper example for those who rely on you. Shortly after this traumatic event, Senji was taken to the prison facility.
Senji's personality is defined by a deep-seated love of combat and a constant desire for thrilling battles, a trait that makes him strangely well-suited to the violent environment of his confinement. He frequently uses words like "slice" or "dead center," reflecting his focus on cutting down opponents. Despite this bloodthirsty exterior, he operates with a strong personal sense of honor, respecting determination and refusing to kill an opponent who will not or cannot fight back. In a stark contrast to his ferocity in battle, he becomes flustered and visibly embarrassed in the presence of women wearing revealing or form-fitting clothes, going so far as to offer his own coat to cover them.
Within the story, Senji is the first Deadman that the protagonist encounters upon being sent to the prison. Initially an antagonist, he is scheduled to fight the protagonist in a deadly public spectacle known as the Carnival of Corpses. Although more experienced, Senji is defeated when the protagonist uses a clever trick to win. As a consequence for his loss, Senji's right eye is surgically removed without anesthesia. Rather than holding a grudge, he gains immense respect for the protagonist's strength and determination. He returns wearing an eyepatch and takes on the role of a mentor and ally, offering crucial advice on how to use his Branch of Sin and refusing to let him lose before a potential rematch. Their bond is forged in mutual respect, with Senji's senior officer's dying words about responsibility influencing his decision to help the less experienced fighter grow.
Senji's key relationships are rooted in his past and present. His former squad members, commemorated by the DSMK tattoo, represent a formative trauma and a source of his personal code. His mentor Domon's final words serve as a guiding principle for his later actions. In the present, his primary relationship is with the protagonist, built from an initial rivalry into a partnership of mutual respect where Senji acts as a powerful, battle-hardened ally.
As a Deadman, Senji possesses the ability to freely manipulate his own blood, a power known as a Branch of Sin. He wears special serrated rings on his thumbs to slice his forearms and release his blood for combat. His specific technique is called Crow Claw, which manifests as two large, scythe-like blades extending from the cuts on his arms. These blades are incredibly sharp, capable of slicing through steel, and can be extended to attack from a distance by controlling the blood's volume and density. He has also demonstrated advanced techniques, including a longer-range Blood Whip formed from a small cut on his finger and a more powerful, supersonic cutting technique known as Invisible Black. His fighting style relies on brute strength, endurance, and remarkable skill in analyzing the abilities of other Deadmen. However, his reliance on blood as a weapon means excessive use can lead to severe blood loss and exhaustion. Throughout the narrative, Senji proves himself to be a formidable fighter, even continuing to battle effectively after losing an eye and later an arm.
