Description
Kazuyoshi Usui, known almost exclusively by his nickname Switch, is a core member of the Sket Dan at Kaimei High School, where he serves as the club's secretary and primary source of information. His most defining characteristic is his method of communication: he never speaks with his own voice, instead using a laptop computer with a voice synthesis program to produce an electronic voice for himself.

Switch is sixteen years old, stands at 173 centimeters, and has a reputation for being very handsome, a fact often contrasted with his eccentric behavior. He has black hair, which he wears short and styled similarly to a specific style, and he always wears a pair of glasses with plastic frames that have no lenses. His typical outfit consists of the school uniform topped with a green vest, and he is almost never seen without his laptop, which hangs from a strap around his neck.

The reason for his silence is deeply rooted in a traumatic past. Before entering high school, Switch was a more outspoken and laid-back older brother to his younger sibling, Masafumi. A tragic incident resulted in Masafumi being fatally stabbed by a disturbed acquaintance. Switch blamed himself entirely for the death, believing his own words and actions set the fatal chain of events in motion. Overwhelmed by guilt and grief, he withdrew into himself, becoming a shut-in (hikikomori). When he re-emerged, he had reshaped his identity as a tribute to his lost brother. He cut his hair to resemble Masafumi's, took to wearing Masafumi's old lens-less glasses, and adopted his brother's nickname, Switch. His refusal to speak and use of a voice synthesizer is a part of this persona, effectively silencing his former self.

In the present, Switch is characterized by a calm, reserved, and stoic demeanor, rarely displaying overt emotion. He has a deadpan sense of humor and enjoys teasing his friends, using his electronic voice to deliver jokes with a completely straight face, which makes his true feelings difficult to discern. Although his default speech is flat, he will sometimes amplify his synthesized voice to unnaturally high levels for comedic effect. He is a passionate fan of anime, manga, and video games, often launching into lengthy and detailed commentaries on these subjects, even though he would deny being an otaku. His worldview is firmly grounded in science and logic, which puts him in direct and recurring conflict with Reiko Yuuki, a student who fervently believes in the occult.

Switch's primary motivation is loyalty to the Sket Dan and a profound sense of debt to its leader, Yuusuke Fujisaki, known as Bossun. It was Bossun who personally reached out to Switch during his period as a shut-in and helped him return to school and to life. In the club, Switch acts as the brains of the operation. His role encompasses a wide range of support activities. He is a master of information gathering, maintaining an extensive and almost invasive database of facts about nearly every student at Kaimei High, including details like full names, blood types, and even measurements. He uses this information to help the Sket Dan solve requests. He is also a skilled electronic expert and an inventor, creating various gadgets and devices, though his inventions often have humorous or impractical flaws. He provides tactical and analytical support to Bossun and Himeko, the club's other member.

His key relationships are central to his development. His bond with Bossun is one of deep respect and gratitude, and he is fiercely loyal to him. He shares a brotherly, teasing dynamic with Himeko. The memory of his deceased brother, Masafumi, looms over him, as his entire present identity is an homage to him. He also has a childhood friend named Sawa Yamauchi, to whom he once confessed his love, a part of his life he has since closed off. A significant relationship that develops over the course of the series is with Momoka Kibitsu, who harbors romantic feelings for him. For a long time, Switch, still haunted by his past, insists he will never fall in love again. However, after he fully recovers from his trauma and by the end of the series, he begins to move forward and accept the possibility of a relationship with Momoka.

Switch undergoes a significant character arc. The story delves into his past in the Switch Off arc, revealing the full tragedy that broke him. Throughout the series, while maintaining his quiet and tech-reliant exterior, he slowly begins to heal. His development is marked by subtle changes in his interactions and a final acceptance of his brother's death, allowing him to look toward the future rather than remain a living monument to the past. His notable abilities include his vast information network, his expert-level computer and hacking skills, his talent for invention, and his ability to change the tone of his voice synthesizer for mimicry or comedy.
