TV-Series
Description
Chiyo, also known as Delicate Cooking Chiyo, is a highly renowned chef and a formidable antagonist within her story. She is a short, elderly woman, standing 142 centimeters tall, with a hunched frame and a surprisingly heavy weight of 250 kilograms. Her physical appearance is distinctive: in the manga, her hair is blonde, while in the anime adaptation it is rendered as a shade of lilac, and is styled into two large buns. Her eyes are most often seen closed as if squinting, but on the rare occasions when she opens them, they appear blank and devoid of irises or pupils.
Chiyo was once a close friend and partner of the master Chin Chinchin, with whom she formed a powerful combo. Their relationship deepened into true love, and they eventually had a son named Ichiru. At that time, she served as an assistant master at the Shokurin Temple and was a devout adherent of the philosophy of Food Honor, possessing a soul filled with gratitude. Her legendary skills as a chef were such that she was consistently ranked in the top five of the IGO’s chef rankings and was the previous head chef of the ten-star restaurant, Disappearing Cuisine. It was said that a single stroke of her kitchen knife was worth 100 million yen, and her prowess was considered by some to be nearly equal to that of the Gourmet National Treasure, Setsuno.
The driving force behind her character is a deep, profound tragedy: the death of her son. This loss saddened her to the point where she lost her inner gratitude towards life and food, and she is shown to still carry the pain, even counting the age her son would have been if he were still alive. Consumed by grief and embittered by what she saw as Chin Chinchin’s continued preaching of Food Honor even after their son’s passing, she defected from her former life. This led her to join the Gourmet Corp., a villainous organization, driven by the singular hope of reviving her son. She believed this could be accomplished by finding CENTER, the Hors d'Oeuvre of the legendary Acacia's Full Course Menu.
This change in Chiyo is stark, altering her personality from a wise chef to a merciless and cold-hearted killer. She severs all ties with her former friends and her lover. She rejects the history and philosophy of Food Honor as useless, and her own practice of it becomes faltered and becomes a liability in battle. She displays arrogance and cruelty, tormenting her opponents and scoffing at the idea of fighting Setsuno. Where once she embodied gratitude, she becomes an abomination in the eyes of others, her priceless knife swings now considered worthless.
Chiyo plays a significant antagonistic role in the story, first appearing as the main threat during the Bubble Fruit Arc when she stages a brutal attack on the Shokurin Temple. Her arrival alone is enough to cause the entire temple and part of the surrounding forest to vanish from sheer intimidation, and she is able to force it to reappear with her power. During the assault, she effortlessly kills an Assistant Master, removing the skin, muscles, and organs from his chest down to the bone in a single, painless stroke. She viciously battles her former lover, Chin Chinchin, and defeats him within his own Spoon Dome. She then engages in a fierce fight with the protagonist, Toriko, pushing him to his limits. She later participates in the Cooking Festival Arc, where she confronts her old rival, Setsuno, in a deadly battle, determined to settle their rivalry.
Her key relationships are central to her narrative. Her relationship with Chin Chinchin evolves from a loving partnership to a bitter and violent conflict, though it is implied that his love for her never wavered. Her rivalry with Setsuno is based on their competition as the world's top chefs, with Chiyo harboring a grudge, believing she would have been named a Gourmet National Treasure if not for Setsuno. Her relationship with her son, Ichiru, is the catalyst for her entire fall from grace, as her actions are all ultimately motivated by a desperate attempt to undo his death.
Despite her elderly appearance, Chiyo possesses astounding physical abilities. Her strength is such that her stabs could rival the power of Toriko’s twin Kugi punch. Her speed is incredibly high, allowing her to impale Chin Chinchin’s chest without him even noticing the attack until it had landed. She has immense stamina and pain tolerance, as she is able to fight multiple powerful opponents, including Chin and Toriko, in succession even while badly wounded. Her signature abilities are based on her kitchen knife techniques, which are an extension of her legendary cooking skills. Her slashes can be performed from a distance and are so delicate that victims often do not feel any pain, or even realize they have been cut, until it is too late. She uses techniques such as the Chopping Board Shield for defense, the One Blade-Thunder Cut where she spins her knife like a drill to stab her opponent, and the Katsura Muki, which can slice an opponent's arm into thin sheets. She also possesses incredible intimidation, or Food Pressure, capable of overwhelming her surroundings with sheer presence alone.
After a near-fatal brush with death during the Cooking Festival, Chiyo is revived with the aid of others and with the help of Chin Chinchin. Following this event, she apparently abandons her goal of reviving her son and lets go of her vendetta against Chin, returning to his side as a kind and wise chef once more.
