Description
Barnaby Brooks Jr., frequently known by the nickname Bunny, is a central character in the anime Tiger & Bunny. He is a young hero in his mid-twenties, standing 185 cm tall, who makes his debut as a highly touted Super Rookie on the popular Hero TV program. His distinctive powered suit, which features long, rabbit-ear-like protrusions on the helmet, inspired his partner to give him the nickname Bunny, a moniker he initially dislikes. Barnaby is a NEXT, a person born with extraordinary talents, possessing a specific ability known as Hundred Power, which allows him to multiply his physical attributes such as strength, speed, and jumping ability by one hundred times for a duration of five minutes. Following this five-minute period, he must wait one hour before he can use his power again. His combat style is notably strategic, relying more on calculated techniques than brute force, and he is particularly renowned for his powerful kicks.

Barnaby's background is marked by a deep personal tragedy. When he was only four years old, he witnessed the murder of his parents, who were robotics engineers and the inventors of nano-metal, at the hands of a criminal syndicate known as Ouroboros. The trauma of this event hardened his heart and became the singular driving force of his life, as he dedicated himself to hunting down those responsible for their deaths. He was taken in by Albert Maverick, a powerful and influential media mogul, who became his surrogate guardian. Barnaby chooses to operate as a hero using his real name as a public declaration of war against Ouroboros. His motivation for becoming a hero is not purely altruistic or fame-driven; at its core, it is a long and calculated quest for revenge.

At the beginning of his career, Barnaby is presented as a cool, calculated, and somewhat vain individual. He is intensely focused on his job, viewing heroism through a pragmatic and professional lens where satisfying sponsors and earning points for the ranking system are of utmost importance. He is confident, bordering on arrogant, and is not initially concerned with the emotional or moral dimensions of saving people, often clashing with his partner over their differing approaches. He maintains a polite and charming facade for the public and his fans, but underneath, he is guarded, antisocial, and trusts no one, believing that personal attachments will only hinder his mission for revenge.

The most pivotal relationship in Barnaby's life and the central focus of the story is his partnership with Kotetsu T. Kaburagi, the veteran hero known as Wild Tiger. Their partnership is born from a corporate merger and initially defined by constant conflict. Kotetsu is an older, more idealistic, and instinct-driven hero, which directly opposes Barnaby's logical, self-serving, and points-oriented philosophy. Kotetsu affectionately calls him Bunny, much to Barnaby's chagrin, who in turn dismissively calls Kotetsu Old Man. However, through their forced collaboration, Barnaby slowly learns to trust another person for the first time since his childhood. Kotetsu's unwavering, if reckless, sense of justice and his ability to connect with people begin to chip away at Barnaby's cold exterior, leading to a deep and genuine friendship.

Throughout the narrative, Barnaby undergoes significant character development. The most crucial turning point is the revelation that his surrogate father, Albert Maverick, is the true mastermind behind his parents' murder and had been using his own NEXT power to alter Barnaby's memories, keeping him on a false trail for years. This shattering discovery forces him to confront the fact that his entire life's mission was manipulated by the man he trusted most. Defeating Maverick and avenging his parents allows him to close this chapter of his life. He evolves from a solitary avenger into a true hero and a reliable partner. He becomes more open, less arrogant, and starts to value his relationships with Kotetsu and the other heroes, even accepting Bunny as a genuine term of endearment. This personal growth solidifies his reputation, allowing him to become the top-ranked hero and earn the title King of Heroes. His journey is one of moving beyond a consuming personal vendetta to find purpose in camaraderie and the larger ideal of protecting others.
