Description
Kimimaro Yoga is the central protagonist of the anime series, a nineteen-year-old second-year student at Heisei University of Economics. He is characterized primarily by his humble and unassuming nature, standing in stark contrast to the high-stakes, volatile world he is about to enter. Raised by his maternal grandmother and aunt following the death of his mother from illness and the mysterious disappearance of his father, Kimimaro has known significant hardship. This background has instilled in him a deep-seated desire for a stable, ordinary, and quiet life. His simple dream is to pass the civil service examination, secure a job as a government official, and build a stable family with a steady income.

To support himself and pay for his tuition, Kimimaro works multiple part-time jobs, including at a convenience store, and is notably frugal, to the point of not even owning a mobile phone because he considers it an unnecessary expense. He is sensitive about his spending and holds a belief in self-reliance, choosing not to open up to others for help. Initially, Kimimaro is portrayed as indecisive and somewhat average, an archetype that allows the audience to relate to his ordinary perspective. He is not obsessed with money or wealth, but rather views it as a necessary tool for achieving a safe and uneventful existence.

Kimimaro’s life is radically altered when he meets a mysterious man named Masakaki, who offers him a chance to earn a large sum of money by using his own future as collateral. This decision draws him into a parallel dimension known as the Financial District, where he becomes an Entrepreneur, or "Entré" for short. In this realm, Entrés engage in weekly high-stakes duels called "Deals" using supernatural beings known as "Assets," which represent their future. Kimimaro’s Asset is a young girl with horns named Msyu, who possesses powerful fire-based abilities.

Initially, Kimimaro is a reluctant participant who is repulsed by the nature of the Deals, as they directly impact the real world and the lives of others. His primary motivation shifts from simple survival to a quest for understanding. He is driven to uncover the truth behind his father’s disappearance, which he learns was due to bankruptcy and suicide as a result of also being an Entré in the Financial District. This discovery deepens his resentment towards the system and his father, but eventually leads to a more nuanced understanding of the sacrifices made for family.

Kimimaro’s role in the story is defined by his growing ideological conflict with the series’ other key figure, the wealthy and pragmatic businessman Souichirou Mikuni. Mikuni sees his younger, less cynical self in Kimimaro and recruits him into his powerful Starling Guild. While Mikuni believes in using Midas Money, the currency of the Financial District, to control and stabilize the real-world Japanese economy from behind the scenes, Kimimaro comes to oppose this philosophy. After witnessing the devastating consequences of bankruptcy, including the erasure of a professor’s children from existence, Kimimaro becomes convinced that protecting the future and the present is more important than any economic gain. This sets him on a collision course with Mikuni, whom he sees as sacrificing the present for a controlled but hollow future.

His relationship with his Asset, Msyu, is a key part of his development. Unlike other Entrés who treat their Assets as mere tools, Kimimaro views Msyu as a partner and a person, even trying to shield her with his own body during their first battle. This bond proves to be his greatest strength, as Msyu’s unusual power and their mutual trust allow him to survive and win against more experienced opponents. He also harbors unexpressed romantic feelings for his childhood friend, Hanabi Ikuta, though she is already in a relationship.

Throughout the series, Kimimaro undergoes significant development, transforming from a passive, average student who simply wants to avoid trouble into a decisive individual willing to fight for his beliefs. He learns to control his power, joining Mikuni’s guild to better understand it, but ultimately breaks away to follow his own path. In the final conflict, he confronts Mikuni and wins, not through superior financial might, but by reversing the "rotary press" that prints Midas Money, thereby reclaiming the futures that had been used as collateral by the Financial District. This act demonstrates his core motivation: the belief that a genuine, if uncertain, future is more valuable than any amount of controlled, artificial wealth.

In terms of abilities, Kimimaro is not a financial genius, but his strength lies in his unique bond with his powerful Asset, Msyu. Her Flations (attacks) include "Scorched Earth," a widespread flame attack used as a Mezzoflation, and "Overheated Economy," her Macroflation. His success in the Financial District is less about strategic cunning and more about his emotional resolve and the extraordinary power that his relationship with Msyu unlocks. Ultimately, Kimimaro represents the perspective that money should serve life, not the other way around, and that the hope and potential of the future are worth protecting above all else.
