Description
Hild is the Daimakaichō, the Great Demon World Leader and the supreme ruler of Hell, also known as Niflheim. Her power is immense, often described as dwarfing the combined strength of the three goddesses Belldandy, Urd, and Skuld. Despite this overwhelming might, she generally operates within the constraints of the doublet system, which maintains a cosmic balance, and she respects its rules to avoid outright destroying her divine opponents.

On the surface, Hild presents a cheerful, happy-go-lucky, and witty personality that strongly mirrors her daughter, Urd. However, this jovial exterior masks a deeply manipulative, calculating, and merciless nature. She can shift from playful to genuinely terrifying with a simple change in her tone and expression, and she has a fondness for revealing outfits. One of her more peculiar personal quirks is a tendency to suddenly kiss people, including Keiichi Morisato and other goddesses, as a running gag that often leaves her targets flustered.

Her most significant motivation and driving relationship is with her daughter, Urd, whom she deeply loves and affectionately calls Urd-chan. This love is complicated, as Urd cannot openly return her mother's affection without being overtaken by her demonic half. Consequently, Hild is a central figure in Urd's personal struggles, particularly when the demon side of Urd's heritage threatens to overwhelm her goddess nature. For instance, in the narrative of Flights of Fancy, Hild is summoned to help fuse the two sides of Urd's split personality. Hild also harbors a strong dislike for Belldandy, as Belldandy’s pure attitude and love for humanity remind Hild of her own failed past relationship with the goddesses' father. She has made several attempts to corrupt or harm Belldandy, and she also seems to hold some form of feelings for Keiichi Morisato, going so far as to travel back in time to seduce him as a child in an attempt to alter the future.

Hild’s role in the story is primarily that of a powerful antagonist who operates largely from the shadows, though she becomes more directly involved when her daughter or the cosmic balance is at stake. After her initial appearances, she leaves behind an avatar on Earth—a smaller, child-like version of herself—which becomes a recurring antagonist for the goddesses and a direct supervisor for the demon Mara. This avatar possesses only a fraction of the true Hild’s power, roughly one-thousandth, yet remains a formidable enemy. In one significant story arc, Hild’s main body is sealed away by a small team of demons from Hell who rebel against her rule, forcing her avatar to seek help from Belldandy and the other goddesses to reclaim her position.

In terms of development, Hild begins as a nearly unseen, legendary threat hinted at through flashbacks and shadows, but she is eventually revealed as a major force in the second season of the anime, Flights of Fancy. Her character is defined by her dual existence as both the cheerful trickster and the merciless ruler, and her arc often involves navigating the fine line between her role as the Queen of Hell and her personal desires as a mother. Her notable abilities include vast magical and demonic power that surpasses nearly all other characters, the capacity to create powerful avatars of herself, and the ability to travel through time to manipulate past events. Her physical appearance is distinct, with long white hair that reaches past her hips and striking purple eyes.
