Description
Harumi Enoki is the father of the protagonist, Takuya Enoki, and his younger brother, Minoru Enoki. He becomes a single parent following the tragic death of his wife, Yukako Enoki, in a car accident. Prior to this loss, he was a typical salaryman, working long hours to support his family. After his wife's death, Harumi must balance his demanding job with the enormous responsibility of caring for two young sons, a role for which he is initially unprepared.
As a single father, Harumi faces two primary challenges. The first arises from within his own home, where his sons, particularly the older Takuya, struggle with feelings of jealousy and resentment, sometimes leading to fights between the siblings. The second challenge comes from external society, as traditional views in Japan at the time often held that a single father lacked the inherent ability to properly raise and nurture his children.
Despite these pressures, Harumi is portrayed as a fundamentally loving and caring father. While grief and the need to provide for his family could have made him distant, he demonstrates a deep consideration for the feelings of others. Much of the practical, day-to-day childcare—such as cooking, cleaning, and scolding Minoru—falls to the young Takuya, but Harumi is the emotional and financial pillar of the family. His role in the story is to represent the adult perspective on grief and responsibility, highlighting the struggles of a widowed parent trying to hold a broken family together while also navigating societal prejudices.
Harumi's most significant relationships are with his two sons. His bond with Takuya is particularly complex, as Takuya often acts as a surrogate mother, leading to a relationship where the son must shoulder adult burdens. The story also explores Harumi's past, notably his relationship with his late wife, Yukako, and his best friend, Yuuki. A flashback to his twenties reveals a younger, less mature Harumi, whose character developed significantly after meeting Yukako, ultimately transforming him into the compassionate and responsible father seen in the main timeline. This developmental arc shows that his patient and considerate nature as a father was not accidental but the result of personal growth and key life experiences. Harumi does not possess any special abilities in the context of the story; his notable attributes are his emotional resilience, his capacity for growth, and his unwavering commitment to his family despite overwhelming odds.
