Description
Behemoth is a high-ranking demon from the anime and manga series Beelzebub, serving as the leader of the powerful 34th Pillar Division, an army that operates directly under the Great Demon Lord and Lord En. Despite his formidable status, Behemoth appears in the human world in the guise of a simple, unassuming old man with white hair and red eyes. This appearance belies his true nature as an exceptionally powerful demon whose presence is clearly threatening.
In terms of personality, Behemoth is generally calm and composed, often to the point of seeming indifferent to direct attacks, which he has been shown to ignore without retaliation. He claims to have stepped down from his role as a general due to old age, but this appears to be more a matter of personal choice rather than a sign of diminished power. He is a figure who prefers to observe and delegate rather than engage directly in conflicts, often allowing others to take the lead in battles while he watches from the sidelines.
Behemoth's primary motivation throughout the story is tied to his son, Jabberwock. Even though Jabberwock was previously removed from the Pillar Division due to his violent temper, Behemoth reinstates him as the acting general. His wish is to see his son succeed him, and he takes a personal interest in testing Oga's skills against Jabberwock.
His role in the story becomes prominent during the Akumano Academy Arc, where he arrives in the human world to locate Oga. After easily defeating members of the Six Horsemen of Saint Ishiyama, he confronts Oga directly to declare war on him and his group. He reveals that he has constructed Akumano Academy on the ruins of Ishiyama High, establishing a new base for demonic activity.
A significant event involving Behemoth occurs during the Mobichi Arc, where he is accidentally summoned by Takayuki Furuichi during a fight against Oga. Impressed by Furuichi's impassioned speech, Behemoth decides to lend him a fraction of his immense demonic power. However, this power is so overwhelming that it begins to physically tear Furuichi's human body apart from the inside. Even after Furuichi loses consciousness and the summoning ends, Behemoth's spirit remains nearby, observing the aftermath. He later explains that he held back from killing Oga because doing so would have caused Furuichi's body to self-destruct, and he expresses surprise at the outcome of his contract with the Great Demon Lord. Before departing, he notes with awe Furuichi's abnormal endurance for a normal human.
Key relationships define Behemoth's actions. His most important connection is with his son Jabberwock, whom he supports and wishes to see rise in power. He also has a formal relationship with the Great Demon Lord and Lord En, as the leader of their army. His encounter with Furuichi is notable because it represents a rare instance of a demon of his caliber lending power to a human, even temporarily.
As for notable abilities, Behemoth possesses immense demonic power, befitting his rank as the former leader of the 34th Pillar Division. He is a master hand-to-hand combatant, having demonstrated the ability to easily defeat powerful human fighters like Hiromichi Gō and Ichirō Shinjō, as well as simultaneously fending off attacks from Oga, Toujou, Kunieda, Shizuka, and Jinno with little effort. Even a tiny fraction of his power, when lent to Furuichi, allowed the human to fight on par with Oga using Super Milk Time, though it came at a great physical cost to the host. Despite his strength, it has been acknowledged that he was easily overpowered and defeated by a fully-powered Satan. His abilities also include more unconventional uses of demonic power, such as changing a person's clothing with a thought.
