Description
Charles Dunois is a significant character who first appears as a transfer student at the IS Academy. Officially, Charles is introduced as the French representative candidate and, more notably, as the second male in the world capable of piloting an Infinite Stratos, following the protagonist Ichika Orimura. This initial presentation is a carefully constructed facade, as Charles Dunois is, in reality, a young woman named Charlotte Dunois. She is the daughter of the chairman of Dunois, the world's third-largest IS manufacturer, and is a privateer, born to a mistress of her father.

Charlotte's motivations at the time of her introduction are not born from personal ambition but from familial pressure. Her father’s company is facing a dire crisis, and he orders her to masquerade as a male student named Charles. Her mission is twofold: to act as a promotional spectacle as the "second male pilot" to boost the company's image, and to covertly gather combat data from Ichika Orimura and his unique IS, the White. Despite this deceptive beginning, Charlotte's true personality is markedly different from the calculated mission she is given.

In terms of personality, Charlotte is widely regarded as one of the most emotionally stable, kind, and compassionate characters among the main cast. Unlike many of her peers who frequently react to Ichika with jealousy or aggression, she is far more level-headed and is often the one to offer a calm perspective or a simple, gentle-hearted comment. She values honesty and deeply regrets the falsehood she is forced to maintain, feeling immense relief when her true identity is discovered by Ichika. After revealing herself as a girl, she expresses a more open and positive affection for Ichika, who gives her the private nickname "Sharl". While generally friendly, she does possess a rarely seen, more threatening side that she is very capable of suppressing.

Charlotte's role in the story fundamentally shifts after her real gender is exposed. Initially an antagonist with an ulterior motive, she becomes a loyal ally and key member of Ichika's circle after he accepts her without judgment. She breaks ties with her manipulative family and re-enrolls at the academy under her true name and gender. She shares a particularly significant relationship with fellow transfer student Laura Bodewig, becoming her roommate. In this dynamic, Charlotte acts as a patient and understanding guide, helping the socially and emotionally rigid Laura navigate everyday life and friendships. Her relationship with Ichika is characterized by her being one of the few people who can offer him genuine emotional support without the drama of the other heroines.

Charlotte is a highly skilled IS pilot, with her abilities surpassing many of her peers. Her technical expertise is extensive, allowing her to perform a rare and difficult maneuver known as the "Rapid Switch" technique. This ability enables her to switch between her IS's weapons almost instantaneously in the middle of combat, demonstrating exceptional concentration and weapon mastery. Her personal IS, the Rafale Revive Custom II (also known as the R-Revive·Custom-II), is a second-generation unit designed for versatility and defense. It is equipped with a massive arsenal, including the powerful Pile Bunker "Grey Shell," and can deploy a defensive system called the Guardian Curtain. Her combat style often focuses on supporting allies and controlling the flow of battle through superior tactics and equipment management. Beyond her IS piloting, she has also received comprehensive military training as a representative candidate, making her proficient in unarmed combat and tactical operations even without her machine.
