TV-Series
Description
Kouichiro Iketani is the leader of the Akina SpeedStars, a local street racing team based on the Mount Akina pass. In the Tokyopop version of the series he is also known as Cole. During the events of Second Stage he is twenty-one years old and continues to drive his Nissan Silvia K's (S13), a turbocharged rear-wheel-drive coupe that reflects his practical yet enthusiastic approach to cars. He works at a gas station alongside Takumi Fujiwara and Itsuki Takeuchi, and it was his initiative that first drew both of them into Gunma's street racing scene by bringing them up the mountain to meet the team.
His personality is grounded, friendly, and well-meaning. Iketani is the oldest member of the SpeedStars and naturally adopts a senpai role toward his younger coworkers, looking out for them and sharing his mechanical knowledge with genuine passion. He cares deeply about his team and takes pride in representing Akina, even though he is not among the most talented drivers in the region. Iketani can be somewhat dense in social situations, particularly when it comes to women, and he has a tendency to jump to conclusions prematurely. Despite this, when faced with high-pressure moments he strives to remain calm and collected, and he is willing to acknowledge his mistakes and learn from them.
In Second Stage Iketani's motivations are rooted in his love for touge racing and his loyalty to his friends. He wants to improve his own driving, support Takumi's growth, and maintain the reputation of the SpeedStars as competitive threats like Team Emperor and Seiji Iwaki begin to dominate Gunma's roads. He acts as a steady, organizing presence within the team, helping to relay information and coordinate responses to challenges, even if he rarely takes the wheel in the central battles. His role is that of a supportive anchor rather than a front-line competitor, and he fulfills it with reliability.
His key relationships define much of his screen time. With Takumi, Iketani is both a mentor and a respectful admirer; he was instrumental in giving Takumi his first taste of serious racing and continues to offer advice on car mechanics and racing lines. With Itsuki, he shares a more equal, brotherly friendship built around their mutual enthusiasm for cars and their time at the gas station. His childhood friend Kenji is another core teammate, and the two frequently discuss team matters and local racing gossip. The most emotionally charged relationship for Iketani in this stage is with Mako Sato, the skilled driver of the Usui-based Impact Blue duo. His attempts to connect with Mako reveal a more vulnerable side: he struggles to confess his feelings, misreads signals, and ultimately lets the opportunity slip away, leading to a poignant, unresolved romantic thread that adds a layer of realism to his character.
Across Second Stage, Iketani's development is subtle but meaningful. He wrestles with his own limitations as a driver, acknowledging that he cannot match Takumi's instinctive talent or the raw speed of top rivals. Instead of chasing glory, he focuses on what he can offer the team through experience and encouragement. The disappointment with Mako forces him to confront his own hesitancy, though he does not become bitter. He remains a constant, stabilizing figure whose dedication to his friends and his club never wavers. His abilities as a driver are modest in the larger Gunma scene, yet he is considered the most capable member of the SpeedStars. He is working on techniques like the back-brake skid to overcome his fear of oversteer, showing a willingness to confront his weaknesses. His true talent lies in his extensive knowledge of automobiles and racing culture, which he eagerly shares, and in his unwavering commitment to the people around him.
