OVA
Description
Itsuki Minami, almost exclusively called Ikki by those who know him, is the central protagonist of the Air Gear series, including the OVA Air Gear: Kuro no Hane to Nemuri no Mori -Break on the Sky-. He is a teenager, approximately thirteen to fifteen years old, living as a foster child with the four Noyamano sisters after the death of his own parents. Before being introduced to Air Treks, the motorized rollerblades that allow users to "ride" the wind, he was the leader of a school gang known as the East Side Gunz, earning him the nickname Babyface due to his youthful appearance and fighting prowess.
Ikki possesses a personality defined by extreme energy and a seemingly contradictory nature. On the surface, he is loud, impulsive, perverted, and often appears to be a simple-minded delinquent with an obsession for eating meat. He is a self-proclaimed genius who takes great pride in his abilities. However, this boisterous exterior masks a deeply determined and hardworking individual. He is shown to train in secret, pushing his body to its limits, and possesses a sharp, analytical mind that allows him to perceive details others miss and devise complex strategies in the heat of battle. When the situation becomes truly serious, his demeanor shifts to a cold, steely calm that his allies find intimidating. His core motivation is a lifelong, almost spiritual desire to fly, a dream he has held since childhood when he would climb to great heights just to look at the sky. This desire is the driving force behind his passion for Air Trek, and he treats his ATs with a reverence that surprises even his sisters.
In the story, Ikki is an extraordinarily talented natural rider who is soon recognized as a candidate for the title of Sky King, the highest rank among Storm Riders. He is prophesied by the rider Simca to be the one who will achieve this, and she eventually places her entire team, Genesis, under his command. Ikki is the founder and leader of his own team, Kogarasumaru. The OVA finds him deeply entangled in the complex conflicts between major teams, including Sleeping Forest, formerly led by his surrogate sister and the object of his childhood friend Ringo Noyamano’s affections. The specific events focus on the consequences of Ringo’s attack on Simca, which forces a direct confrontation between Ikki and Ringo. During this battle, Kururu Sumeragi brings him the newly developed Wind Regalia, a powerful piece of equipment that becomes central to the fight.
His key relationships are complex and drive much of the plot. He shares a close, if often strained, familial bond with his four foster sisters: Rika, Ringo, Mikan, and Shiraume. Ringo, who is also his classmate, harbors a secret romantic love for him, which he is characteristically oblivious to for a long time. Another major figure is Simca, the Migratory Bird, who acts as his mentor and believes in his destiny, though her methods are often mysterious. Within his own team, he is the leader and close friend to members like Kazu, Onigiri, and Buccha. His relationship with the split-personality rider Agito and the gentle Akito is also significant, marked by rivalry, respect, and an unusual closeness. A notable and humorous characteristic is the small crow, Kuu, who lives in Ikki’s spiky hair and acts as his constant companion and alter ego.
Throughout his development, Ikki evolves from a gang leader seeking revenge to a focused rider with a singular goal. He learns to not just ride the wind but to command it. His abilities are rooted in his natural affinity for the sky, allowing him to perceive the "Wing Road," an invisible path on the air itself. He practices relentlessly on Mount Shinonome, creating scars from his intense training regimen. His signature techniques include the "Pile Tornado," where he creates a cyclone with his kicks and rides its inner walls for incredible speed, and the "Null Wind," a more advanced technique that creates a massive area devoid of wind, neutralizing the abilities of other Wing Road users. As the Storm King of the Hurricane Road, his power centers on controlling the wind for both immense offensive attacks and high-speed mobility, effectively allowing him to fly.
