Description
Aichou Ninku, also known as Aichou of the Sky or the Rooster Ninja, is a central character in the Ninku series. He is the former captain of the original 10th Division Ninku Unit, a group of elite warriors who fought in a great war against an empire. Following the war, the empire turned against the Ninku corps, forcing its members into hiding and persecution.
Physically, Aichou is depicted as a slightly muscular young man of average height. His appearance undergoes a notable change across different story arcs; in earlier stages, he has short black hair and a tanned complexion, but during the events of the Second Stage, his hair is portrayed as blonde. His typical attire consists of blue denim jeans, a black tank top, and brown shoes.
The core of Aichou's personality is defined by a pronounced hot-headedness and a deep-seated animosity toward other people. This hostility is a direct result of a harsh and neglectful upbringing, which left him with a cynical worldview and a profound distrust of humanity. The expression of this trait varies between different versions of the story. In the manga, he is characterized by a seething contempt for humans, but in the anime adaptation, this is often softened into a comical misogyny, manifesting as a frequent and vocal distaste for women. His interactions with the character Rihoko are a prime example of this, as he typically responds to her persistent romantic advances with insults and slurs, a trait that is played for comedic effect in the anime.
Despite his general antagonism toward people, Aichou forms a very strong and loyal friendship with his fellow former Ninku captains, Fuusuke and Touji. These bonds are the most significant relationships in his life, providing him with a sense of camaraderie that contrasts sharply with his isolated past. While his initial reaction to Rihoko is one of contempt, his stance softens considerably upon learning that she is Touji's sister, indicating that his loyalty to his friends can override his default hostility.
Aichou's role in the story is primarily that of a powerful combatant and a steadfast ally. He travels with Fuusuke and Touji as they are hunted by the empire's forces. His skills are essential to the group, particularly his unique combat abilities. In the OVA titled Knife no Bohyou, set four years after the war, Aichou joins his companions on a mission to deliver a memento to the sister of a fallen comrade, helping to defend her village from pirates. This story reinforces his core traits of formidable combat skill, deep distrust of outsiders, and unwavering loyalty to his Ninku allies.
Throughout the narrative, Aichou's character development traces a path from isolation to camaraderie. While his foundational cynicism endures, his journey with Fuusuke and Touji allows him to form meaningful connections, proving that his ingrained hatred for humanity is not absolute and can be overcome by the bonds of friendship.
Aichou is known as the Rooster Ninja, a title that reflects his specialized fighting style. His most notable abilities revolve around the sky, utilizing his exceptionally strong legs to perform devastating aerial assaults. He can jump to incredible heights and essentially soar through the air, giving him high-impact combat capabilities and superior mobility. This sky-based combat prowess is his primary contribution to the team's fights, often targeting enemy machinery and delivering powerful blows from above. He is also frequently depicted as the pilot of a rickety biplane, which serves as the group's primary mode of transportation.
