Airi Ogata is an eleven-year-old sixth-grade student in class 6-3 at Kamohashi Elementary School. She has long black hair typically styled into twin braids and a distinctive mole just under her left eye, a trait she shares with her older brother, Ichirouta Ogata. Her usual attire consists of a striped shirt worn under a denim jumper. Among her female classmates, she has the most childish build and is the shortest, even shorter than Hitoha Marui. Airi leads a trio called the Hopeless Squad, which includes her friends Shiori Itou and Mayumi Katou. The defining aspect of her personality is an intense, obsessive romantic crush on her classmate Shinya Satou. Her behavior in pursuit of his affection has been described as an unstoppable locomotive of love, leading the squad to breathe in his air, steal his personal belongings, and spread rumors. She is extremely jealous of anyone or anything that might attract Satou’s interest, frequently targeting Futaba Marui as her primary rival, but has also shown jealousy toward inanimate objects like a soccer ball or her own underwear. Despite the extremity of her actions, she remains completely unaware that her conduct is that of a stalker. She channels her surprising abilities into this pursuit, possessing impressive athletic skills, cooking abilities, and talent in handicrafts, and she sometimes suffers comic nosebleeds when near Satou or indulging in pleasant fantasies about him. Her infatuation began in childhood when Satou gave her a piece of bread, transforming her previous dislike into unwavering devotion. In one incident, she mistook a photograph of the Marui triplets’ father, Soujirou, for a picture of a young Satou and competed with Futaba for it. She has vowed to never wear underwear again after being misled into believing that Satou prefers girls who show him their panties. She often faints when touched by other boys, claiming her body will disintegrate, but quickly revives upon touching or smelling something belonging to Satou. Airi views Shiori and Mayumi as both best friends and romantic rivals, though she is closest to Mayumi, who often tries to protect her modesty. She sees Futaba as her main love rival but also respects her and once invited her to join the Hopeless Squad. She has an affectionate yet complicated relationship with her older brother, Ichirouta, who has a little sister complex; she loves him but is often embarrassed by his public displays of affection and tries to hide her feelings for Satou from him. Despite her single-minded focus, she has a surprisingly naive side, still believing in Santa Claus and once mistaking Satou’s father for him. Although she was the last of the three Hopeless Squad girls to fall in love with Satou, she became the group’s leader and the most devoted to him.
