Minori Chihara
Description
Minori Chihara is a Japanese voice actress and former singer born on November 18, 1980, in Utsunomiya, Tochigi, and raised in Saitama. Her career in the entertainment industry began in 2003 when she served as an assistant on a radio program, a position she gained through an audition. This opportunity led to her winning first place at the Seiyū Grand Prix Club and earning the right to train at the avex artist academy. In October of the same year, she was selected as a finalist in a voice actor and singer audition sponsored by Pony Canyon.
Chihara made her voice acting debut in 2004 with a role in the anime series Tenjho Tenge. That same year, she launched her personal blog, minorhythm, and released her debut album, Heroine. In the following years, she expanded her presence in the industry by hosting several radio programs, a common activity for voice actors in Japan to connect with fans and build their profiles.
Her career reached a new level of prominence in 2006 when she was cast as Yuki Nagato in the immensely popular series The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. This role became her most iconic and significantly raised her public profile. The series' ending theme song, Hare Hare Yukai, which she performed alongside co-stars Aya Hirano and Yūko Gotō, was a major success, achieving gold disc certification. For this song, Chihara, along with Gotō, received the Radio Kansai Award at the Animation Kobe Theme Song Award ceremony. The following year, she appeared as a guest of honor at Anime Expo 2007 in California, alongside her Haruhi Suzumiya co-stars, highlighting her growing international recognition.
Beyond her breakout role, Chihara has built a substantial and diverse body of work across numerous anime series, films, and video games. She has frequently taken on roles in long-running franchises, demonstrating her ability to develop a character over time. One notable example is her portrayal of Miku Izayoi in the Date A Live series, appearing in Date A Live II, Date A Live III, and Date A Live IV. She also consistently voiced the character Ekitoku Chouhi across multiple iterations of the Ikki Tousen franchise, including Dragon Destiny, Great Guardians, Xtreme Xecutor, and Western Wolves. Another recurring role was Mitsuki Nase in the Beyond the Boundary series, which included the television anime, the Idol Saiban! short, and the Past and Future films.
Her filmography also includes a wide array of other significant roles. She voiced Kaori Nakaseko in the Sound! Euphonium series and its films. She played Horizon Ariadust, also known as P-01s, in Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere. Other notable roles include Konoha Muramasa in C³, Teresa Beria in The Qwaser of Stigmata, Chiaki Minami in Minami-ke, Tōka Ryūmonbuchi in Saki, Coopa in The Tower of Druaga, and Airi Ogata in Mitsudomoe. In more recent years, her roles have included Pipimi in Pop Team Epic, Camie Utsushimi in My Hero Academia, Tomo in Princess Connect! Re:Dive, and Lidel in Smile of the Arsnotoria.
Concurrent with her voice acting career, Minori Chihara enjoyed a successful career as a J-pop singer. She released numerous singles and albums under the Lantis label. Her music career was marked by several achievements, including a performance at the Nippon Budokan in 2010, making her the sixth female voice actress to hold a concert at that prestigious venue. In 2011, her musical work was recognized with the Singing Award at the 5th Seiyu Awards. She often performed theme songs for anime in which she also acted, such as Paradise Lost for Ga-Rei -Zero- and Terminated for Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere. In April 2021, Chihara announced her retirement from singing, holding her final concert, Minori Chihara the Last Live 2021 Re:Contact, in December of that year. She continues her voice acting career and left her long-time talent agency, HoriPro International, in March 2022.
