Description
Ekitoku Chouhi is a student at Seito Academy and serves as the successor of the legendary warrior Zhang Fei from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. She is fifteen years old and a first-year student. Her appearance is notably tomboyish, featuring short, dark brown hair that is often styled in a slightly rugged cut. She is usually seen either in her Seito Academy uniform or in a training kimono.
In terms of personality, Ekitoku is known for being very brash and aggressive. Her preferred approach to most situations is to attack first and think later. This impulsive nature is especially evident in her interactions with her best friend, Gentoku Ryuubi. Ekitoku is frequently annoyed by Gentoku's attempts to avoid training and has no qualms about using force to motivate her and ensure she practices. Despite this aggressive exterior, Ekitoku has a more sensitive and matronly side that contrasts with her combative demeanor. She is a loyal and protective friend, and her caring nature is most often directed toward those she considers part of her inner circle. She also has a well-documented love for snacks and food in general.
Her primary motivation stems from her loyalty to her friends and her school. As a protector of Seito Academy, she is driven to defend it from outside threats. A significant source of internal conflict is her own perceived weakness. While she is initially only a C-rank fighter, historical prophecies tied to her predecessor, Zhang Fei, state that she will one day become powerful enough to match ten thousand men. Her natural fighting ability is said to be potentially equal or even superior to that of her ally, Unchou Kan-u, but her self-deprecating attitude and lack of confidence initially prevent her from reaching this potential. Her motivation is therefore also tied to overcoming her own self-doubt to become the warrior she is destined to be.
Within the story, Ekitoku plays a crucial supporting role. She is a steadfast fighter for Seito Academy and a key participant in its battles against rival schools, particularly Kyosho Academy. Her role is largely defined by her willingness to stand in harm's way for the sake of her friends. She takes part in major conflicts, such as the defense of Seito and the alliance with Nanyo Academy for the Battle of Red Cliffs. Her most memorable act is during the final battle, where despite being defeated, she gathers her strength to throw Unchou Kan-u to the top of a tower. This allows Kan-u to confront and defeat the primary enemy, demonstrating that Ekitoku's value lies as much in her unyielding spirit and teamwork as in raw power.
Her key relationships define her character arc. Her most important relationship is with Gentoku Ryuubi. As Gentoku's best friend and protector, Ekitoku is fiercely loyal to her, acting as both a guardian and a tough motivator. She shares a close, sister-like bond with Unchou Kan-u, and the two often work together as the central fighters of Seito. Throughout the series, she also develops a significant relationship with Kansho Kochu. After initially fighting him and being defeated, they become allies. Their relationship evolves into a close friendship, often spending time together and enjoying meals, with hints of a potential romantic connection.
Over the course of her story, Ekitoku undergoes a subtle but meaningful development. She begins as a headstrong but insecure C-rank fighter who often exhausts herself after fighting only a few opponents. Through a series of defeats and battles, she learns to overcome her physical limits. Her growth is not necessarily in achieving the legendary power foretold of her, but in the determination and courage she displays. By the end of the events of Dragon Destiny, she has proven her willingness to sacrifice herself for her goals, culminating in the feat of strength that enables her team's victory. In later manga storylines, she continues to fight as one of Seito's Five Tiger Generals, sustaining critical injuries in battle but surviving thanks to her allies.
Regarding her abilities, Ekitoku is a toushi, a fighter who can harness one's inner power or chi. She is an adept hand-to-hand combatant, fighting with a style that is straightforward and aggressive. Her physical strength is notable; she has the power to throw individuals weighing as much as Unchou Kan-u a great distance into the air. While she may lack the refined technique or overwhelming power of the series' top-tier fighters, her main asset is her tenacity. She has an indomitable will that allows her to continue fighting even after sustaining severe injuries, and she is not afraid to face opponents who are far stronger than herself. This combination of latent potential, raw physicality, and sheer determination defines her as a warrior.
