Description
Kaori Nakaseko is a third-year student at Kitauji High School and a member of the school's concert band, where she plays the trumpet. She holds the positions of trumpet section leader and also serves as the band's accountant, managing its finances. Her appearance is marked by short, bobbed dark-brown hair and brown-reddish eyes, with a distinguishing mole on her left cheek. She stands 166 centimeters tall and was born on September 3, making her zodiac sign Virgo.

Within the concert band, Kaori is renowned for her gentle demeanor and soft tone of voice, qualities that have earned her widespread popularity among the members and the nickname the band's Madonna. Her approachable and kind nature attracts devoted admirers, most notably the second-year student Yuuko Yoshikawa. Despite her own high level of skill, Kaori is known for her humility and is not one to seek the spotlight, preferring to maintain a modest and composed presence.

Kaori's motivations are deeply rooted in her past experiences within the band. Before the arrival of the new advisor Noboru Taki, the club's selection for competitions was based on seniority rather than skill, a system that left her feeling improperly evaluated and frustrated despite being one of the best players. This history makes her a staunch believer in meritocracy, even when it conflicts with her personal desires. This is most clearly demonstrated during the audition for the trumpet solo in the piece Crescent Moon Dance. When the prodigious first-year Reina Kousaka fairly wins the part, Kaori faces a wave of support from underclassmen like Yuuko who argue that the solo should go to a third-year. Although she accepts the result publicly, privately she struggles with her unfulfilled wish to play the solo. To resolve the conflict and prove that the auditions are fair, she requests a public re-audition, demonstrating her integrity and desire for the band to unify based on true ability. During the re-audition, she plays her best but ultimately recognizes that Reina's performance is superior, and she gracefully declines the part, prioritizing the band's collective success over her individual ambition.

In the story, particularly in the film Gekijō-ban Hibike! Euphonium: Todoketai Melody which focuses on the potential departure of the vice president Asuka Tanaka, Kaori maintains her role as a supportive senior and section leader. She is shown to be a stabilizing influence, participating in key events and performances while the band prepares for the national competition. Her most important role, however, is in the trumpet solo arc, where her actions prevent a schism in the newly motivated band and help establish Taki-sensei's fair audition system as the new standard.

Her closest relationships are with her fellow third-year band officers, president Haruka Ogasawara and vice president Asuka Tanaka. She shares a particularly profound bond with Asuka, often visiting cafes with her and enjoying her company. Interactions with Asuka can sometimes cause Kaori to become shy or blush, especially when receiving compliments, and her admiration for Asuka is a significant part of her personal life. As an upperclassman, she is a respected mentor to younger members like Yuuko Yoshikawa and Natsuki Nakagawa, whom she once encouraged to stay in the band. She also develops a quiet respect for the protagonist Kumiko Oumae, recognizing her as a key figure in the band's efforts to support Asuka.

Kaori undergoes a subtle but important development from a talented but overlooked player to a mature leader who puts the group's welfare above her own long-held dreams. Her decision to cede the solo is not an act of defeat but a demonstration of her growth and her understanding of what true leadership requires. After graduating from Kitauji High School, she attends nursing school to pursue a career in healthcare, channeling her nurturing spirit into a new field. Beyond music, her hobbies include baking sweets, a passion consistent with her liking for sweet foods, and she has been trained since childhood in traditional Japanese arts such as tea ceremony and flower arrangement. Her favorite color is white, and she has noted dislikes for insects and crowded environments. She plays a Yamaha YTR-850 trumpet, an instrument she inherited from her grandmother.
