Description
Kagura Tsuchimiya is the central character of Ga-Rei-Zero, depicted initially as a young girl whose life is shaped by loss and duty. As a member of the prestigious Tsuchimiya family of exorcists, she is destined to inherit a heavy burden. Her background is marked by the death of her mother, after which she is taken in by the Isayama family. This act of kindness leads to her life-changing meeting with Yomi Isayama, who becomes a beloved older sister figure and the most important person in her world.

In her early years, Kagura is portrayed as a shy, dutiful, and somewhat sad child, a stark contrast to the more spirited individual she becomes later. As she grows, her personality reveals a feisty, ambitious, and determined young woman who is capable of fierce loyalty. A significant part of her motivation stems from the support and affection she feels for Kensuke Nimura, a classmate who becomes a close ally and potential love interest. Her feelings for him are evident in moments of jealousy and concern, and she affectionately calls him "Ken-chan". Despite her combat prowess, she carries a deep-seated reluctance to harm opponents that appear human, a weakness born from the understanding that they were once people. This moral line proves to be a fatal flaw in her profession as an exorcist.

Her role in the story is inextricably linked to her relationship with Yomi. When Yomi is corrupted by the power of the Sesshōseki, the Banestone, and turns against humanity, Kagura is placed in an unbearable position. She is forced into a conflict where she must confront the sister she adores, ultimately leading to the tragic climax where she has no choice but to kill Yomi. This act is the pivotal moment of her development. By slaying the person dearest to her, she transcends her previous psychological block against fighting humanoid enemies, hardening her resolve to eliminate any threat without hesitation. Her journey from a protected younger sister to a warrior who must make the ultimate sacrifice defines her arc.

Kagura's key relationships are the core drivers of the narrative. Her bond with Yomi Isayama is the emotional heart of the story, a sisterly love so profound that Yomi’s deepest wish is to be protected from her own corrupted self. Her relationship with Kensuke provides her with motivation and strength, evolving from initial support into deep mutual care. She also has a dynamic with Shizuru Imawano, who begins as a rival but later becomes a close friend. Her father, Karaku Tsuchimiya, passes on the family's spirit beast and legacy to her before his death at Yomi's hands, cementing her responsibilities.

As an exorcist, Kagura possesses notable abilities. Her primary power is the control of the Ga-Rei Byakuei, also known as Shirō, a powerful spirit beast resembling a large white dragon. The beast is sealed on her back, and she controls it with a binding chain that links their souls, meaning any pain Byakuei suffers, she also feels. She also wields a specialized exorcism sword known as the Michael 13, a katana equipped with a trigger in the hilt that can fire shots to enhance the speed and power of her slashes. Prior to this, she uses the Michael 12. After her father's death, she also receives a fragment of the Sesshōseki, which she wears as an earring and which can resonate with other stones to track their location.
