Description
Miku Izayoi, known by her codename Diva, is the sixth Spirit to appear in the Date A Live series and is a central character in Date A Live: Mayuri Judgement. She is a seventeen-year-old girl with light blue hair and eyes, and her Astral Dress, named Shaddai El Chai, is primarily yellow with blue and white accents. She was originally a human before being transformed into a Spirit by the mysterious entity known as Phantom at a moment of profound despair, making her one of the few Spirits who began life as a normal person.
Her background is deeply tragic and directly shapes her personality. From a young age, Miku had a passion for singing and little talent for academics or sports. She debuted as a highly successful idol singer at the age of fifteen under the stage name Tsukino Yoimachi. However, her career was destroyed after she refused the advances of a powerful television producer. False scandals were fabricated against her, causing her fans, predominantly male, to turn against her with hatred. The immense stress and betrayal caused her to lose her voice, and she became suicidal. It was at this lowest point that Phantom appeared and offered her the power of a Spirit, granting her a new voice and the ability to command through song. This betrayal by her male fans and the public left her with a deep-seated misandry, a hatred for men that defines her early behavior. She views women as either servants or collectibles, initially treating them with a cold, possessive disregard.
This hatred of men is the driving force behind her early actions. She enrolls at Rindouji Girls' Academy, an all-girls school, and uses her Angel, Gabriel, to control and manipulate people. Her Angel takes the form of an organ and grants her the power of what is called a magic voice, allowing her to brainwash and control others with her singing, as well as create powerful sound-based attacks. This ability also gives her a weakness in close-range combat, a flaw she later works to overcome. Her personality is flamboyant, selfish, and arrogant. She is openly flirtatious with girls she finds attractive and is blunt about her desires. Her motivations during her initial confrontation with Shido are to maintain her control and reject the possibility that any man could be selfless.
Her role in the main story is that of an antagonist who evolves into an ally. When Shido first encounters her, he must cross-dress as a girl named Shiori to even approach her, as she is immune to his usual methods due to her hatred of men. She takes an interest in him only because he is unaffected by her hypnotic powers. After a school festival competition, she becomes enraged at losing and goes on a rampage, taking control of other Spirits and attempting to have the entire city kill Shido. However, after Shido and Kurumi Tokisaki confront her and she witnesses Shido's genuine, selfless willingness to risk his life to save Tohka Yatogami from DEM, her worldview begins to crack. She repeatedly tests him, trying to prove his selfishness, but his unwavering resolve and his promise that even if the whole world turned against her, he alone would remain her fan, finally breaks through her trauma. She allows him to seal her powers, letting go of her hatred and her old life.
After being sealed, Miku undergoes significant development. She loses her arrogance and her misandry, although she still prefers the company of her female fans. She becomes openly affectionate and loving towards Shido, whom she calls darling, and extends this affection to the other Spirits, treating them with genuine warmth and encouraging Shido's harem rather than resenting it. In Date A Live: Mayuri Judgement, she appears as a fully integrated member of the group. Her role in the film involves participating in the series of dates designed to stabilize the spiritual energy threatening Tengu City. Her date with Shido takes place at a concert venue, highlighting her identity as a singer and her flamboyant personality. She uses her sound-based powers from her Angel Gabriel to support her allies in battle against the rampaging Angel Kerubiel, proving her transformation from a selfish antagonist into a reliable and powerful teammate. Her key relationships include her deep bond with Shido, who saved her from her trauma, and her sisterly, if flirtatious, connection with the other Spirits, especially Tohka, whom she initially wanted to add to her collection. Her primary relationship is with her music itself, which was both the source of her greatest joy and her deepest pain, and which she reclaims as a positive force after her redemption.
