Description
Fumitaka Mizutani is a student at Nishiura High School and serves as the left fielder for the school's baseball team. In terms of physical appearance, he is a male teenager with distinctive reddish hair and greenish-blue eyes. When not in his baseball uniform, he is often seen wearing headphones around his neck, suggesting a personal interest in music outside of practice.
Mizutani is not portrayed as one of the most naturally gifted players on the team, and his baseball skills are less developed compared to some of his teammates. His fielding can be inconsistent, and he occasionally makes fumbling catches or commits errors. This unreliability in defense leads to catcher Takaya Abe giving him the derogatory nickname Kuso Left, which translates to Crappy Left. When batting, Mizutani tends to rely more on luck than on refined technique, and he has difficulty reading pitches effectively.
His personality is characterized as nerdy, clumsy, and approachable. The team manager Chiyo Shino'oka notes that most people find him friendly and easy to talk to. He admits to enjoying conversations with female classmates, displaying a somewhat flirtatious side, and he frequently compliments other players on their physical flexibility. Despite his easygoing nature, Mizutani lacks self-confidence, which is partly fueled by concern that reserve player Shintarō Nishihiro could potentially replace him as a regular starter due to his inconsistent play.
Mizutani's motivations center on wanting to contribute meaningfully to the team. He admires pitcher Ren Mihashi, and during a game against Tosei High School, he actively tries to make a valuable contribution, successfully scoring a run. He has a one-sided romantic interest in the team manager Chiyo Shino'oka. Unaware that she has feelings for Abe, he occasionally shows mild suspicion regarding her affections toward another teammate.
His relationships with other teammates are notable. Beyond Abe's harsh nickname, fellow player Kōsuke Izumi gives him another nickname during a game against Bijōdaisayama following a misunderstanding where Mizutani interprets the word RICE as the Japanese word for rice, kome. He shares the exact same height as teammates Kazutoshi Oki and Takaya Abe. His commute to school takes fifteen minutes, while the return trip home takes thirty minutes. In a personal quirk, he once described a fantasy scenario in which he subdues a female burglar in his home and threatens either to contact the authorities or to do something else unspecified.
