Description
Heihachi Edajima is the founder and principal of the private school Otokojuku, a position that establishes him as one of the most powerful and influential figures in Japan within the world of the story. Born in 1928, his background is extraordinary even from childhood. He was an academic prodigy, passing the entrance exam for Tokyo Imperial University at the age of eleven after only a week of study. This intellect would later manifest during World War II, where he served as a Rear Admiral and used his genius to develop advanced military technology such as ultra-mobile submarines, jetpacks, and even an atomic bomb. Following the war, he attempted a career in politics before founding Otokojuku to forge young delinquents into honorable men through extreme, militaristic training.
Physically, Edajima is an imposing figure, standing 195 centimeters (approximately 6 feet 5 inches) tall and weighing 115 kilograms (approximately 253 pounds). He has a muscular build, a grim expression, thick eyebrows, a prominent Fu Manchu mustache, and an extraordinarily large chin. He is entirely bald, having lost his last strand of hair in the early chapters of the manga. His typical attire consists of a traditional kimono and hakama with geta sandals, but in battle, he often wears samurai armor adorned with a crescent moon or simply a loincloth emblazoned with the word Peerless. Despite his advanced age, which spans from his late fifties in the main series to well over 150 in some spin-offs, his aging appears to have slowed, partly due to restorative naps he takes at a power spot on Mount Fuji.
Edajima's personality is a potent blend of stern authority, a profound value for brute strength, and an unshakeable belief in the Spirit of Japan. He is famous for his loud, resolute declarations, most notably his catchphrase, I am the principal of Otokojuku, Heihachi Edajima, which he often shouts before delivering a decisive blow. In the early parts of the series, his character had a comedic edge, performing absurd actions with complete earnestness, such as giving a speech that consisted solely of his introduction. However, this comedic aspect diminishes as the story progresses and he becomes more central to the plot, though his overwhelming presence remains constant. While he values strength above all, he is also highly clever and cunning, possessing immense political and economic influence that allows him to get his way with a single phone call and use deception when necessary to achieve his goals.
His role in the story is largely that of an ultimate authority and the driving ideological force behind Otokojuku. He creates and oversees the brutal training regimens and deadly trials that the students must overcome, such as the Four Great Trials of Terror, a challenge he himself is said to be the only one to have survived decades prior. At the same time, he is not a distant figure; he frequently intervenes in major conflicts, often appearing suddenly to face the most powerful adversaries or to rescue his students when they are overwhelmed. He serves as the model of manhood and strength that all his students, particularly the protagonist Momotaro Tsurugi, strive to become. His key relationships are primarily with his students, whom he views as his own children, and he maintains a long-standing rivalry with figures like Kinzo Kumada, which led to the establishment of the rival school Fuun Rakanjuku. He also has a son named Edajima Kai, who becomes a significant character in later sequels.
Regarding character development, Edajima is a remarkably static figure, especially in his older age. The development lies more in the revelation of his legendary past, which is explored in spin-off series like Peerless The Legend of Edajima Heihachi, showing his superhuman feats and adventures as a youth, including capturing Mao Tse-tung and attempting to assassinate
